Republican Dede Scozzafava endorsed her former Democratic opponent Sunday in the race for an upstate New York congressional seat, shaking up the contest for the second day in a row after exiting the race Saturday.

Scozzafava dropped out after Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman experienced a late-in-the-game surge. The move was expected to consolidate GOP voters behind Hoffman on Tuesday.

But on Sunday, Scozzafava issued a written statement in which she backed Democrat Bill Owens.

"I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same," she said. "In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. He will be an independent voice devoted to doing what is right for New York. Bill understands this district and its people, and when he represents us in Congress he will put our interests first."

Hoffman and Owens are competing for the 23rd Congressional District seat formerly held by Republican John McHugh, who was lured away by the Obama administration to be Army secretary.

Scozzafava was criticized by members of her party for being too moderate on social issues. However, it's unclear how much of an impact her endorsement will have as there were mixed messages coming out of the GOP -- a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee said Saturday that Scozzafava was releasing her supporters to vote for Hoffman.

Democrats were quick to call the Owens victory a rebuke of the conservatives who rallied behind Hoffman, including Sarah Palin, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Dick Armey and others. "This election represents a double-blow for National Republicans and their hopes of translating this summer's 'tea party' energy into victories at the ballot box," said Democratic Congressional Committee Chairman Rep. Chris van Hollen of Maryland. "Now they have to deal with an emboldened and well-funded far right wing that refuses to tolerate moderate Republicans with differing opinions."

First heard of this while driving home from school and listening to AM radio and some radio host was interviewing the Conservative candidate.

So really who do you think is going to win the "fight of the soul of the GOP"? I,for one, am hoping not the Palin religious nuts since to them supporting things like abortion rights is evil and liberal or something.

The "Religious Right" is slowly becoming more and more marginalized in society, but it will take a while before they are anywhere close to insignificant.  In fact, there very well may remain pockets of fanatical religious conservatives for as long as there is a United States of America.

However, I can't help but think that all of this recent GOP infighting is still going to ruin Republicans' chances, as a whole, of winning a sizable number of elections in either 2010 or 2012.  One of the biggest problems for the democrats for years now has been that they lacked the party unity and purpose that helped the GOP remain so cohesive.  Now, that unity is largely lost, and both parties have a hard time getting everyone in line to push a unified party agenda.

It's like a race between a drunk guy and a runner who's shot himself in the foot.

I find it laughable that the left is trying to say limbaugh is the leader of the republican party.

What we need are third party choices.

Good to see the Repubs tearing themselves apart locally, but I do want them to have a stronger candidacy that is more representative of the US.

They've moved too far to the right imo.

I find it humorous that in spite of the Republican nominee pulling out and endorsing the Dem, the Dem still only won by a small percentage...against a third party candidate. I'd hardly call that a resounding victory...for either side.

This is true.

At the very minimum it was a shot across the bow of both the GOP and the DNC.  They now know that 45% of the voters in rural NY are willing to vote conservative even though the GOP candidate was running more adds against the conservative than against the Democrat.  Could be something, or not.

If Scozzafava wasn't on the ticket twice, things could have went differently. That and if the GOP didn't back a RINO and spend $1 million backing her and running ads against Doug Hoffman... I believe things would've also turned out differently if there was a primary too. We'll see how next year turns out.

LOL Palin screws another one... if she keeps this up I guess we can start to call her the new Lieberman

Its a victory for moderates and sounding rebuke of social conservative socialists... and it was GOP ground since 1850, four point spread or not, that says a lot.

Besides, isn't the strong national influence trying to run out a moderate run counter to the GOP idea of pro local govt representation and anti big national govt. We can only hope that this is a spark that helps return sanity to the GOP.

The Democrats have wandered too far left, into the realm of Socialism.
The Republicans have wandered too far into the 'Religious Right'.

A moderate, common-sense, fiscally responsible, Independent party would appeal to a majority of Americans.

Interesting that people are blaming Palin (as if no other GOP talking heads stumped for the candidate) for the loss in NY. Couldn't at all the the fail policies of the RINO that simply didn't appeal to the voters, could it?
