Have you used a Macbook? Much as I think they're overpriced crap, the build quality is superb.

Yea, my friend has one of the previous gen Macbooks. I wasn't all that impressed. Shitty touchpad and mushy feeling keys. I get more click out of my girlfriend's 4 year old Acer.

I think Apple store is the last place to get a non-subjective opinion...

I meant with regards to the case, I'm sure the internals are held together with a glue gun.

Is the casing of a Macbook made out of Aluminium? If so wouldn't that mean its heavier than with the plastic encased ordinary, cheaper laptops?

Aluminium is pretty light. It's a lot stronger too, so they can make it thinner. It may be a bit heavier I guess, but doesn't feel heavy in an excessive way.

Why would it mean that?

I think it's an aluminium/magnesium alloy and it is thinner than the plastic and the MacBook Pros weigh less than the MacBooks.

You sure it was aluminium?

Aluminium weighs hardly anything.

Now that you ask I'm not sure. I thought it was Aluminum since that material is ligher than other metal but maybe it was made of steel?

U can stand on the magnesium strenghtened Lenovos. Do you plan on shooting them with shotgun maybe? My brother has 10y old IBM thinkpad and its shell is still in top notch condition. If you rather want bling bling aluminium that gets scratched and paint falls off in a year, well, thats your call. But IBM/Lenovo chose to use the hard plastic covered magnesium casing for a good reason.

I don't want it to look like shit, yet be able to support a bus. I don't stand on my laptops. I want a quality laptop chassis, like the Macbook Pros have. The Lenovo is at the end of the day, a magnesium frame covered by what the 1980's thought a laptop should look like. That's not what I'd like to see, nor is it what people want to buy.

Really? Check out that Engadget article I posted about the new unibody plastic Macbook. Look at how great the case of it is. Again, the only Macbook worth buying is the Pro. Anything else is wasted cash.

Only the Macbook Pro has an aluminum case. But no, aluminum is very light. I know the Mini you're talking about, though. My brother and mother each had one. Those were some hefty things, but I think that had more to do with the 1.8" drive in them. They might have had weights in them to make them feel more solid, too? I honestly don't know - just shooting in the air here.

I would say that only the new glass pads are anything really special. I've played with my friend's Macbook (previous gen) enough ... I wasn't impressed. I've used both and many touchpads. My Acer EEE PC 900 has a nicer touchpad than the one on a Macbook. Again, personal preference. I don't like em. You do. What's changed? Nothing.

It just wouldn't be so good looking if the battery wasn't built-in.

In this case, I can't see a reason to justify the extra money (imo). His not doing video / photo / music editing and he doesn't need it as a fashion accessory either.
The only reason really would be that they look pretty

The thing with pretty notebooks is that you want them so stay pretty and not get scratched etc. The piano black shiny coat from my EEE looked horrible after some time. Where as hard plastic&magnesium combo Lenovo for example uses is almost scratch proof and you can just throw the lappy to ur bag and forget about it, it will be just fine.
