Common sense? I.e. don't download a music file with an .exe extension, or go to lots of porn sites and click on all the ads.

AVG Free is fine. I've been using it forever and haven't gotten any viruses ever. The only thing you need to couple with anti-virus is smart browsing.

get malwarebytes as well, run occasional scans with it, it's good at picking up stuff that anti virus programs miss.

However much the OLD Norton sucked, the newer one has made massive improvements. Norton 2009 was a fantastic leap for them, whilst they're maybe not on par with NOD, they've made a good jump towards that standard.

Spybot is utter shit, it's more an adware program itself than what it searches for. Malwarebytes is good though.

I don't really recommend any free AV, they're all pretty poor.

Protip: for scans only, use Dr Web.

Yea, I'm with Zimmer on this one. Pay for your anti-virus. There really aren't any good, free programs out there. Avira wouldn't remove the rootkit that I had on my computer back in September. MBAM did. MBAM is free also, though if you want active protection, you need to pay.

Norton is also not total shit. I have a Corporate Edition that works great and is lightweight. I bought Norton 2009 for a friend, however, and it's very nice. Very light and doesn't bog the computer down. Read quite a few reviews to make sure I bought him something good because he's older and isn't very Internet smart.

As for a firewall - I can recommend Comodo. Works only on Windows machines, though. It stopped the rootkit I had on my computer from spreading and multiplying. Did a good job of cutting it off and making sure it didn't spread. Definitely recommendable.

anti virus software is a joke.  dont download viruses and you won't have any problems or need for any lame AV software.

i used to think the same way. running this network (255+ user) i would not let a machine run w/o it.

lol let me rephrase that.... i don't use anti-virus software because it's a joke, but apparently my users can't resist installing secretsextapeofyou.exe because they all think they are in a sex tape or something.  then i get the call from them about how "i tried to watch this video but nothing happens when i click on it and my anti-virus keeps popping up and i can't get it to go away."

It doesn't matter how much you say "safe web browsing" will work. Dude, I never did any kind of shady browsing on either of my computers, but one of them still got a rootkit and passed it to the other. Explain that one to me, bro. There are always security flaws being exploited in Windows and other programs you use, so it's not really all about safe web browsing. You can still catch shit and get infected.
