I need one with the following:

Must be 175$ or under
A 16:9 resolution, I've heard that movies have black bars on the top of them on 16:10 monitors, unless someone can advise me otherwise
DVI support
A resolution that is supported by a lot of games
Has good picture, I don't know very much about what contrast ratio looks good and all that LCD stuff
A good brand obviously
Larger than my current monitor which appears to be 16" viewable.

I assume you mean black bars on the top.  Having them on the side just doesn't make sense.

Not all movies have an aspect ratio of exactly 16:9, you still might have letterbox bars even with a 16:9 monitor.

But it's probably going to be less prominent on a 16:9 right?

On the contrary, having tiny black bars just before your screen ends is probably going to be more distracting than a gap of black before the screen frame.  Otherwise it'll feel like it doesn't quite fit.

Yeah but the problem you may run into with a 16:9 monitor is you need for game supported resolutions.  Most games i've played will support odd resolutions (and any 16:9 monitor is odd for a PC) but you may run into some that won't

games dont support monitors, they support resolutions of monitors, and many games dont support 16:9 aspect ratio monitors, nothing you can do about that

O.K., whatever, just find me one with a good widescreen resolution that a lot of games use.  I don't care about the aspect ratio anymore just find me a monitor please

It shouldn't be a problem for most games.  My 24" is 1920x1200 and I run most games at the native resolution, with an ATi 4890 that is mildly overclocked.

1080p runs fine on my GTX260-216. <3 it

And will the battlefield games run on it or will I have to set a custom resolution?

BF2 runs well in 1920x1080. In fact all newish games I play work fine. Only the old 90s stuff is problematic

As I recall, the most recent patch for BF2 added support for widescreen.

O.K., last questions:

So it won't mess with my framerates that much going from 1152x864 to 1080p?.

And will the older Battlefield games like 1942 and Vietnam support it?

I hope you all understand why I'm being cautious, I really want it to work good.

Going from 1152x864 to 1080p will mess with your framerates a lot but 260GTX will still handle that very nicely. 1942 and Vietnam will not support widescreen.

Well, the thing is that on the Company of Heroes benchmark, I got 30 FPS minimum at all highest settings, no AA, 1152x864.  Will my performance take enough of a hit for that to be unplayable?
I'm kind of worried about other newer games as well, since I can easily play them all at highest settings at this resolution with no noticeable choppiness at all, but I've never made such a dramatic jump in resolution before so I'm not sure what it does to framerate, and I don't want to buy this monitor just to have the framerates kick my ass on its native resolution.

Maybe the next size down would be good?  I mean I love love how stable my FPS is right now and I'd like to be able to upgrade to widescreen and a better resolution (and ffs, an LCD) but I don't know if I'm quite ready for 1080p yet.

I play BF2 at 1680x1050 graphics maxed, AA forced to 16x in the Nvidia control panel and I get ~100-120fps with a GTX260 C216

You'll be fine. Worst case scenario, you'll have to tone down the AA in newer games but not completely off. You'll thank yourself later for upgrading from a 16"

So should I get a monitor of that resolution then?  I was already looking at this before I made the thread:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … @GMAIL.COM

Or for 10$ more I can get this one with a 10000:1 Contrast ratio over the 2500:1 of the first one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductRe … 6824009174

And is having simply a bigger monitor that much better as well?

That second monitor seems to have a glossy screen.  That usually makes the colors brighter and such, but if you use it where there is any light at all, expect massive reflection coming off the screen
