Anyway, I should probably just be quiet now. Just had to get that off my chest since I have to put up with it from people I know, but with people on the Internet I'll get as riled as I want!

Inland NSW towns are the same, it took about 5 minutes of being out in Dubbo before I was called a faggot and physically threatened. The closest I've come to being stabbed was in Sale in Victoria.

Port Douglas had a better atmosphere than most NSW coastal towns I've been to and that is about as north as you can get.

Every stereotype may have some truth to it, but it's a stereotype that could just as easily apply to nearly any state of Australia.
lol I remember playing a gig in Ulverstone once, in Tassie's northwest. BEFORE the gig some guy in the toilet was going on to some other guy how he was literally waiting for this third dude to turn up so he could take him out to the car park and stab him. A couple fights broke out that night and shortly after we left in another car, some mates were waiting for a cab outside when a group from the pub came up to them and started picking a fight. At that exact moment the guy whose house we were staying up pulls up in his combi, someone inside slides the door open and yells "get in!" and they jumped in and made their getaway, Scooby Doo style

We later played pool on the dining table whilst listening to James Brown with two garden gnomes going around the turntable. One of the guys, who was on acid, later tried to jump into bed with me because he said it "would be fun". I told him pretty firmly to find somewhere else to sleep.

tl;dr rural towns in Tassie can be shitholes too.

At least they don't seem to have the SA feral goatee.

Honestly the Gold Coast isnt that bad... just a few places, like being west of the M1 and south of Surfers are pretty uninspiring.

Still looking to move to Brisbane. People in Brisbane are so much nicer looking too.

In light of the QLD budget handed down yesterday:

'Wrong policy'

Meanwhile, a Sydney academic says the axing of thousands of public sector jobs will not help the Queensland economy.

University of Western Sydney academic Steve Keen is credited with correctly forecasting the global financial crisis some years ago.

He has told a national superannuation conference on the Gold Coast that shedding jobs will damage the economy further.

"Those public servants are going to be spending out of their dole cheques instead of out of their wages, and they're going to be spending a damn sight less," he said.

"Some of them are going to lose their houses as well, so you are going to depress housing prices when the Government is trying to inflate them with the first home owners scheme.

"It is the wrong policy."

Campbell Newman is such an idiot.

A few people I know - conservatives too - have said that Campbell Newman is the best thing to have happened to the federal ALP this term.

I wouldn't be surprised. Such a public outcry at what he has done to date it is also seen as indicative as to what Abbott will do federally if elected.

It's interesting to see where the cuts are coming and what the outcome will be. My father works for the state government, and in his department over 75% of the jobs cut are from the head office not from regional, research or current project areas.

Even if Newman manages to regain popularity, chances are it will be too late for Abbott's election next year.

His predecessor hired too many people with no plan to pay their salaries, he's had to unhire them.

I don't give a crap about either side but saying fixing the budget means Newman is evil doesn't really make a lot of sense.

he said he wouldn't fire too many public servants.

now he's firing about fifteen thousand at least. kind of a change of heart there, and in a way that kind of matters.

He's may be fixing the budget in the short term but he's going to ruin the economy in the long term.

The people defaulting on mortgages will go up. Frontline services are already starting to suffer (doctors answering the phones at the hospital because the admin staff have been sacked as one example). More people joining the dole queue = less money going into the economy from salaries = slower economy. He's axing public service jobs that either save the economy money or actually make money, like the SPER for example (last month alone they collected $21.7 million in unpaid fines - a new record) which are going to lose staff... list goes on.

The LNP love to talk about the fabled notion of the "trickle down" for propping up big business with corporate welfare, yet seem oblivious to the real world where people are immediately affected for the worse on a large scale. Cutting 4,000+ jobs from the already struggling health sector (where the average wait time in ER is 6 hours) is not going to help - and yes, many of the jobs going are nurses and midwives.

Over the past 10 years the public service has remained relatively stable in terms of growth, despite the claims. Ironically last year Newman not only made a promise that there would be no forced redundancies, he actually said in a media statement that the former government's plan to cut 2,500 jobs from the public service was a bad move and under an LNP government the public service would actually grow.

Not from essential services - especially when he could find $4 billion to build a new tunnel, $110 million to give to the turf club to build a new racetrack and bar, and $120 million to build a new CBD tower for - and here's the kicker - the government.

Those projects also employ people - where should he make cuts?
Demand for healthcare and so on is essentially unlimited, and Australian health workers are pretty well paid - the Doctors here wnet on strike because $400k/yr wasn't enough.
Either find some cuts or suggest how much taxes should go up by.

QLD has the lowest tax rate in Australia. An economist today said that if the rates rose to be on par with the rest of the country that would be enough to gain surplus, without making any job cuts whatsoever.

Also, the Costello Report which this has all been based upon has been widely panned as basically being garbage and conducted in such a way to support a pre-conceived ideaology of the economy rather than the actual state of the economy... which to me has a similie to what religion does with the facts.
