So true, that's the reason I changed course. Took me until the end of the year to figure out there was no way I was going to make it through another three years of it though. Took courses at three different colleges (or 7, if you count taking one or two courses only). Used programming as a minor in all three, just to fill in holes in my schedule.
Have learned more programming from self-study, than I ever did in any school.
From teachers who knew less about the course than I (MIPS assembly language, Intro to Unix, etc, etc),
to textbooks that were horribly wrong,
to courses where the teacher was teaching right out of a MS users guide to Visual Studio (watch him read today's chapter for the first time, if you showed up to class 15 minutes early)
to 'required courses' where you're doing 1960's program flowcharts, then coding in Visual Basic
(regardless of the fact you've taken graduate level courses elsewhere, were coding in Basic and Apple Assembly in 1984)
Go with a good general engineering degree; Mechanical engineering, Chemical engineering, Civil engineering, etc.
A good general engineering degree will work to get you employed by a very wide range of companies.
A degree is there to teach you the language and general concepts of a field,
So when you start a job as a fresh-from-college newbie, your employer sees the degree on your resume, and knows that you can be trained to perform a job.
Degree means you're trainable in a career - not that you're 100% up-to-speed the moment you're hired.
Stick to a general engineering degree. It'll get you in the door at a wider variety of places.
