I thought the aliens arrived in the 80's but the events of the film took place 15 or 20 years later.  I could be wrong, I saw it months ago.

The aliens arrived in the early 1990's, and the movie takes place in the early 2010's.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Everyone has modern mobile phones. However, the movie is not actually set in the 1980s. This is the date of the aliens' arrival. The events of the film are approximately 20+ years later, and on-screen date stamps put the movie explicitly in the year 2010.
