How do people know whats the latest and best. I still go by number of cores and ghz. But now theres so many model names!?

Like...

Lynnfield, i5, i7

Is there a chart somewhere that explains which one of these are better? I see a HUGE difference in price but the ghz and amount of cores dont seem much different.
