It's like getting a thesaurus thrown at you. You can see it coming a mile away, but it's still hard to avoid.

Guess you shouldn't ever get in a car, walk down the road, play any kind of sport etc. All of which have higher death rates than sky diving.

I heard the sensation is not so much falling, but rather floating when you jump. Though I'm just going by an SAS vid I watched on parachuting.

correct me if I'm wrong but I'd rather be able to try something a second time round even if it went wrong, the problem I have with parachuting is there's no gray area if it goes wrong, just a big red one

Jumps are usually done in groups. There is a back up chute in each pack. If the main chute fails, back up is pulled. If the back up fails, another diver will come grab you and harness you together. If those all fail then you fall down to Earth.

It's pretty fucking awesome.  If you want to prepare for the feeling, try sticking your head out of a car window going 80mph down the freeway.  That's kind of what it feels like when you are falling.  Once you get over the initial rush of jumping out (and once your mind is content with the fact that you just went against everything your mind was telling you in falling out of a plane) it's pretty fucking sweet.  I don't think I've ever had a rush quite like that.  Pulling the 'chute is pretty crazy too, because it seems like an eternity from the time you pull the cord to the time the 'chute actually catches.  Once you have the 'chute pulled you just float around looking at various landmarks and maybe your shadow in the clouds if you are lucky.

You'll have a blast, maybe even kiss the ground once you land.  If you have the extra coin fork it out for pics/dvd.

Then if you like it, you can try Wingsuit flying

Looks epic, but pants-browningly scary.

I went skydiving at Skydive Arizona in Eloy, AZ. It was years ago. It was fun and not nearly the thrill or excitement I thought it would be. It was actually really calming. The freefall was around 1 minute.

I listen to John Denver.  It has good synergy with the sound of my super-swamper tires meeting the long country roads.

Mmmm it's actually really safe and if you're that scared you can do it with a trained instructor strapped to you. You've more chance of falling down the stairs, being paralysed from the neck down, giving up on life and going to Dignitas than dying whilst skydiving.
