The double sided tape Xigmatek supplies to install the backplate sure is epic good stuff, much better quality than I expected.

Its so well stuck I am having little difficulty removing it again.

I am open for ideas. Freezer is not an option as I don't want to risk the health of the board.

I am leaning towards hot air blower, but lets keep that as final resort. So... thoughts?

tape in all 4 corners between mobo and the plate labeled 775 (double sided backplate can be used in S775 too, hence the confusing 775).

Just curious, why is freezing worse for the board than hot air?

I can protect the rest of the board from heat, but not from cold. Condensation is something to think about as well when freezing hw.

I can't really see the tape, but maybe soak it in Goo Gone?

Sounds about same as the hot air blower. The one at work is decently adjsutable. I'll try that. (I don't own iron)

But the blower will need longer to make it warm enough for removal making it more possible for pcb to melt. With iron however the heat is applied directly to the backplate making it hotter sooner.

Use ice cubes for a localised area freeze.

Just put some hot air on it, it'll come off easy.

Looks like he's removing the bracket to get the CPU out to clean it and to use a different paste. (I sure hope you didn't do that "upgrade???" you were talking about Panzer).

Vodka?
Disolves most glues and i dont see how the alcohol could damage anything as long as the board was carefully dried after and no electricty put through it for a while.
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

Why do you need to remove it? Unless you're changing the motherboard itself, can't you just leave it stuck on the back while you swap out CPUs/thermal paste/cases/whatever?

This if you can, I recently destroyed one of my 775 mobos getting the back plate off, if your new cooler has the same threading on the hardware, just use that or swap hardware if possible.

Success :>

No heat or cold was used. more like sharp blades.

PS. that residue is just soft glue, which I removed from one of the corners for demonstration.
