Right. And I assume cryogenically treated cables improve sound too.

Let's not turn this into one of those threads.
Never heard those and never intend to as they cost several thousand dollars. They have amazing specs, you would like them.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Oh my. The deal that the guy gave me instore is just too good to ignore:
Cambridge Azure 550A amp
Mordaunt Short Aviano 2s
Cambridge Aud500 2ph-3.5 2m

All for 500GBP.

Freezer, sup look at the Mordaunt Shorts and tell me what you think. I listened to them and they were beautiful. Such an inviting sound. I compared the Denon Amp to the CA one and the Demon was just too in your face. Also, Mordaunt Short are owned by CA, which means the amp and speakers go perfectly.

Thoughts?

British speakers are usually quite good. For the price, I'd say you did quite good.

Mordaunt Short - people speak highly of them, I personally can't comment on the particular model as I haven't heard them but you can't really go wrong with MS. You still need a DAC if you wan't this setup to sound as good as the amp and speakers deserve. How much more is the 6 series amp?

While we don't have those speakers, our home theatre uses small MS speakers (shame really, want something bigger at the front ). Sound great. Also, we have some ancient MS40's that I mentioned in the open thread. One works properly, and sounds epic. Wish the other worked..

I spoke to all the guys there, and they said I will be fine without a DAC for now. Hell, the guy that was talking to me about them uses his soundcard for his speaker set up, and I'm pretty sure he knows his stuff.

Why the hell would I want the 6 series amp? The only difference between the 5 and 6 series is that the 6 has more "juice" in it. I'm not going to playing incredibly loud music or having parties with them on. I don't need more power.

More power =/= louder.
Depending on the speakers, you might need more power to actually drive the magnet... and if you under-power it, it won't sound as good.
Higher power means the amp will have an easier time getting the speaker to do what it's supposed to do, which is sound good.

Of course, you want to be careful and not go way over power....

These are the speakers that are actively tested with all the CA Amps. I'm not stupid enough to underpower my speakers. The normal power input for the speakers is 15W - 115W and the wattage that the 550A puts out is 60W. More than enough. The 650A only ouputs 15W more.

Normal listening volume for me is usually around 50-100mW.

Milliwatts. One watt into a pair of reasonably sensitive speakers is way above normal conversation level.

Note that power and experienced loudness is logarithmic. To make it sound twice as loud as one watt, you need ten Watts. Twice as loud as ten watts calls for a hundred.

So I bought the system. Sitting in my living still boxed up.

The system has changed since last time; I decided to go all out instead of getting a soundcard.

I had a listen to both the Aviano 1s and the Aviano 2s and the 1s came out on top. Even though the 2s have a larger driver, the 1s had a much snappier and nicer bass. The mids and highs were pretty much identical, but the bass was just lovely on the 1s. I compared with Teardrop by Massive Attack to get a right idea.

So my final system that's still sitting downstairs:
Mordaunt Short Aviano 1s
Cambridge Audio Azure 550A Amp
Cambridge Audio DACMagic
Soundstyle Z2s Speaker Stands
Cambridge Audio Ultra 100 10m speaker cable
Cambridge Audio Arctic Interconnectors

Final price:
£664

Fucking awesome deal.
Got the cables and the interconnectors free (would have cost another £50 if I had to pay for them).

I'm really glad you got the DacMagic, you won't be sorry. What changed your mind? I heard a lot good about the Z2s stands and they were pretty cheap too compared to other quality stands right?

I just thought it would be utterly pointless to shell out on a "decent" soundcard when I can go the full way with a DAC. Especially the DACMagic.

Yeah, the speaker stands got 5/5 on WhatHifi. I got them for £50, reduced from £70.

The system, in reality, should have cost me £820, but the guy loved me and we had awesome chats about games (he is a BF2 gamer ) and therefore he took a lovely chunk off the price.
