yeah so i cant complain too much.  But Im still having problems finding classes I need and I hear its getting worse next year.
I've been looking into getting my Masters in Engineering, but the problme i'm running into is, they offer a master's program but I'd be the first student in 4 years and the only student to go through it.  They currently have 10 people in the Civil Engineering program.  Over all enrollment is way down for this state run college.  It once was an amazing 4 year technical college now it's terrible.
theyre elimanating a lot of programs in the CSU system because of lack of enrolled.  This summer is not being paid for by the school's budget so instead of raising tuition they are firing part timers and eliminating majors programs.  I had to sign up for classes I want to take in summer yesterday because if not enough poli sci majors enroll, there is no political science for the summer.
Are the majority of students commuters in the cal system? Because I see no other reason for you guys having like twenty different campuses. Completely inefficient system that way. They should consolidate the schools into 2-3 megacampuses (The SUNY system needs to do this too).

That's a good point.  CSULB, CSULA and CSUF are all within like 30 miles of each other.

If they merged a bunch of the schools it would cut down tremendously on overhead costs and overlapping curriculum. You're probably employing 2-3 times the amount of professors that you really require as well.

The overwhelming majority of students at my school are commuters.  I think its 4% of the student body actually lives on campus.

30 miles in LA terms means about an hour a part from each.  I live about 40 minutes from csun, 20 minutes from CSULA and about an hour from long beach.  burnzz is correct.  Really different campuses.  CSUN is more the college experience while a lot of people at CSULA just go to class and go home.  I dont know anything about long beach except its a decent school

I was going for under an hour apart.

If we include UC Riverside, we'll need to add San Bernardino, San Marcos, CSU San Diego, UC San Diego, and Channel Islands.

Yeah on the first two.  Pomona and Northridge, well, depends on your starting point.

And then we have Community Colleges.  All over the place, and some quite good ones.

If I'm not mistaken every year 9-12 student in the country was given a laptop. Too bad that was after I had already graduated.

My school wasn't underfunded, it just wasn't allowed to use funding in reasonable ways. The government gave them a few million dollars (parts of stimulus) and said go ahead, spend it. So they wanted to build a multi-purpose concert hall type thing. Government said no, "you already have double the building space per student allowed. So my school just bought some fucking stupid shit. Ie A BLUE NEON CROSS for our chapel (wtf are we a Christian brothel or something?), automatic soap dispensers, and hundreds of new computers even though they had been replaced only a few months before... all the while our school fees went UP and one teacher was let go due to cut backs. wtf?? seriously

Shit that sucks man.

@Penal, is that a joke? No student at my school got any money from the govt.

As for the school itself, its pretty well off considering. Just constructed some gigantic motherfuckin building dedicated to maths and hospitality which cost a few million bucks, with the government chipping in a few tens of thousands of dollars. Thats now done, and they've just started a gym/assembly hall, which cost I do believe over $6 million. However it replaced the car park so now all of the teachers and students who can drive have to park in the neighboring streets and on the oval. Its a private independant school, so we dont get any money from churches, and very little from the govt. Everything I guess is from school costs, which are quite reasonable and do get students somewhere.

We've also got quite a few computers, however some dick thought it'd be hilarious to give some classrooms only 4 computers where some technologically demanding subjects are taught, so everyone once in a while you see students wandering around the school looking for spare computers. However to compensate for this they've managed to get a few batches of laptops which can be booked for classrooms. However I graduated on the 20th of november so I no-longer attend this place.

tl;dr, my former school is fine.

Funnily enough, with the new laptops my school (only counting senior school 7-12 not primary) has more computers than students lol

(Former school I should say)

The school district spent a nice chunk of change on a new the administration buidling. Then a couple of years later, they cancelled the sport programs because they NEEDED to cut something to balance the budget. A levy was passed to increase taxes for teh school.

I don't think we were underfunded, but out headteacher took most of our schools money for her own gain, organizing staff trips to michelin star restaurants on the school budget. She was investigated and left in shame, then they spent all our money on cctv camereas and large fences when we had to share textbooks between 4...

I still miss school though.

Actually, a friend of mine went to the same high school as John McCain's daughter (you know, the former presidential candidate?) and their school didn't even have proper air conditioning - and this is in Phoenix, Arizona, one of the hottest places in the United States in the summer. And it's summer there about 10 months out of the year.

My high school isn't but that's cost its private lololol

My university seems to be doing fine. Heck they're building a giant dorm building that's gonna have 700 beds so they definitely don't seem to have a problem with that.
