VLC can play anything yeah? Well apparently American Gangster is just one step too far for the mighty program.

Wont play the disc. disc is clean, VLC has been working for everything else i've tried, just not this dvd.

not blu-ray. working on a fresh install of XP, so i have some shitty version of WMP that wont let me play dvds unless i pay for something. regions set fine. both VLC and WMP read the disc fine, but i cant use WMP without being confused, and VLC reads it and sees all the folders etc, but wont load any of it

You should be able to just play it off the CD. But VLC has become an extremely outdated and poor player. For complete simplicity KMPlayer is your best bet. Otherwise, downloading Media Player Classic - Home Cinema and installing CoreAVC will work too.

KMPlayer will have every codec you need built in. Above and beyond that you can obtain CoreAVC for high bitrate 1080p movies.

None of these crappy codec packs or old media players can compete against them.
