He'll probably have to wear the equivalent of a space suit and stuff.

When an Astronaut does an EVA technically he's travelling way faster than the speed of sound relative to the Earth. So it wouldn't be the first time someone is like, outside on their own, going faster than the speed of sound, if you get me.

But it probably would be the first time someone is, outside, whilst breaking through the barrier under their own propulsion. It is possible, he'll defo need a specialised suit. Falling from space it's more than easily possible to break the sound barrier just depending on gravity. Depends on the height really.
Dude - watch the video! Yeah, he's wearing a spacesuit of some description. No idea if it's the ones astronauts use or one specially built for this jump.

Mek, there are a lot of variables involved: air resistance, force of gravity (9.8m²/s is the accelerational force of gravity, iirc) and all kinds of other stuff. What if some kind of weather pattern develops during the ascent/fall? Then he might have to fall through a lightning storm.

Or instead of just debating the idea you guys could read the actual news article on it. :p

Baumgartner, who is famous for stunts such as jumping off the Petronas Towers, aims to skydive from a balloon sent to at least 120,000 ft (37km).

It is likely that in his long freefall of more than five minutes, he will exceed the speed of sound - the first person to do so without the aid of a machine.

...

He will be wearing a specially modified full-pressure suit and helmet.

The organisers of the project called Red Bull Stratos say, if all goes well, he should break the speed of sound about 35 seconds into his descent.

Well that video makes for a pretty awesome bit of music. Especially with the narration like that.

Yeah, if he is up towards the outter range of the atmosphere, terminal velocity will be significantly higher.

Terminal velocity only comes from drag being equal to your weight. Drag only comes from pushing air molecules out of the way. If there is almost no air their isn't much to stop him.

This makes me want to go skydiving right now. So fucking epic, 120,000ft ffs, thats 10x what most people jump.

Space shuttle re-entry is like Mach 25. This guy will be aiming to go around Mach 1 (well the aim is to go just above it), totally different really. He'll heat up for sure, but nothing like catching fire... probably.

You don't see planes catching fire when they break the sound barrier?

He won't be going fast enough for the friction to be hot enough.

Shit, going over mach 1, eh? He's gonna need one kick ass parachute. What kind of plane is he jumping out of at that altitude?

Hardly, he'll slow down to regular free fall speeds as the air gets thicker.

Yup. Sky divers hit terminal velocity all the time. I am sure they are trying to make the suit a little more slippery, which will mean his terminal velocity will be a little more then a regular skydivers, but they don't seem to be building cones around the guy or nothing so it shouldn't be drastically different.

He will only be going so fast because he will be high enough for there to be no air to slow him down. Once he gets back into the thicker stuff he wont be able to maintain speed.

It's called a balloon...

I really hope they record the whole thing and make pictures with the best possible quality cameras available - I wanna see this thing in HD!

WTF !!!! that looks like outer space to me... but its not... and its 70 000 feet
The new guy is jumping from 120 000 feet and its still not outer space...

HOW HIGH THE FUCK IS OUTER SPACE !!!!!

According to wiki: There is no clear boundary between Earth's atmosphere and space. It lists heights from 50 - 76 miles  (264,000 ft - 401,280 ft)

He did the jump twice, the first time he blacked out for a full 7 minutes of the 15 minute free fall if I remember correctly.
