Wow

Seriously though, how do you not just dig through 20 inches in a few minutes? Knowing avalanche snow is the flaky non-sticky snow it should be like crawling through a bajillion little airsoft bbs 1mm in width.

Then again I've never been in an avalanche.

Because it's all over your body, and you have the pressure of all the other snow on top so you can't move? Thats my guess.

Dunno if he would be able to see light through the snow but apparently people like panic and shit and end up digging down.

Go bury yourself under 20" of snow and we'll see.

It's the pressure and lack of space for movement that makes it so hard to dig yourself out.

Bump.

This is interesting and I don't want this thread to get buried on page 2.

Remember if you're digging out of snow, you gotta place it somewhere. If you're buried in it, you dont exactly have space to move.

And the best to identify gravity would probably be spit a bit and see were it dribbles to, especially if you can move your arms much.

EDIT- and snow is great at conserving heat (to an extent) in an area, think igloos.

That nice insulating effect also does a good job of suffocating you, I'm not sure how they managed to make that tiny pocket of air last 17 hours

EDIT: Never mind I actually got round to reading it

Well it's not a perfectly sealed box, there should definitely be some air leaking in and out.

not always. The heat from your breath/body causes thin layers of the snow to melt, which start to refreeze as ice

You can compact the snow around you with little movements then eventually you have enough space to bend your knees, arms, etc...

Remember this isn't wet heavy snow this is lightweight "Dry" but freezing snow. 20 inches = 50cm, that's NOTHING! I used to make these little ice caves when I was younger and one time I had the good idea of making a fire in one...

I'm still here.

Finray has the right idea.

Yeah...right....

"lightweight dry but freezing snow" doesn't compact. Ever tried making a snowball with it? I have. Sure, you can move it around, but it continually fills the small gap you've created. Ever been in a ball pit? I have.

You guys make it seem like avalanches are not big deal; 'just g'on and dig up'. lmao.

Yeah I know what you're talking about. I've been in a ballpit before, and I've been under snow before.

It's shit to get out from an avalanche, but another big problem is the fact the snow is so small you inhale a lot of it, then it melts in your lungs.

RIP from drowning

That is wrong.

Breath through sleeves to prevent air pocket closing up around your mouth and suffocating you within 2 hours (only learnt this last week), have a GPS beacon thingy on you, hope you have mates with you who know what they are doing.
