They need an aerial plug. They generall work in exactly the same way the little card in your tv does except you get some (normally fairly mediocre) software front end. Windows 7 picks them up and integrates them really nicely though. My current one (decent enough) was £30, you would be best of trying to get one that has a dual tuner but they're normally about £50+ and only really apply if you can be arsed to record using it.
