alcohol is better at melting snow and ice than salt. The only major drawback is it is flammable. GL
I mean if it's tile, I wouldn't do any drilling. Vibration might damage the tiles. Plate then again will handle the vibration and prolly give an extra boost to the cracking. Be sure to get a good hold of something or tie yourself to something so you won't trip. And start from the drains so the ice on the roof won't take the pipes down if it decides to start coming down in a rush.Ultrafunkula wrote:
What kind of material is the roof anyways? Felt, tile, plate?
Blast it with piss

Hm ... that some badass ICE you got there, pretty darn hard to get off also ...
If you have tiles I would call a proffesional, takes very little to damage the tiles ...
I have one of these ... use it on the roof almost every year ... and use a harness so you don't fall off the roof

At the point it is now, I'd suggest using a Hammer and chisel, then purchasing an electric cable for the future.

the only real solution to ice dams is preventative medicine.
but
you don't have to remove all the ice. you just need to cut channels in it for the water to run off.
as previously mentioned you can get electric ice dam heater wire which is the safest solution since they are meant to be plugged in 24/7. you are supposed to install before you have ice though. the ice keeps the heat from the wire between the ice and the roof. laying it on top of the ice so it melts down to the roof might not work.
you can cut channels with hot water starting (turn up your water heater) at the roof edge and working your way to the top of the ice. never top down. also your channels HAVE to be at angle (~45deg) to the roof edge to catch the most water.

I'd just buy a couple of 5 gallon buckets of that ice melt stuff that they lay down on sidewalks. Apply generously.

Me too. At this point he'll be spending entire days trying to chisel it away or cut channels.King_County_Downy wrote:

The shape of an eye in front of the ocean, digging for stones and throwing them against its window pane. Take it down dreamer, take it down deep. - Other Families
You know what else you could do...
Hook up your garden hose to the hotwater tap on your water heater.
Hot water ftw.

That's going to cause more problems than anything.

Never use water to melt ice. You'll just cause more problems.
the drill bit thingo should work. our entire drive froze up this winter, had to use a spiky thing in the end to smash holes in it, then it mostly just came off in slabs

True, just depending on the oustide temp I guess. If it's above freezing, use hot water to speed up the melting process. Obviously if it's just gooing to freez back up, don't.SplinterStrike wrote:

Sorry, what's the problem with ice dams? I've never seen one before, especially like that
And above your tomb, the stars will belong to us.
melting shit + a chipper like eggy posted about a day later to get it off of the roof
They stop the melted snow and drift snow from coming off the roof, which can pile up enough to risk a collapse. You can either make the crawl-space warmer, or the roof steeper.-Sh1fty- wrote:

EDIT- not warmer, colder.

circular saw?
Axe should work good. Get one of those old school snow shovels, or better yet a grain shovel, should be hard enough to chop at the ice and shovel/push it off the roof.
problem is it is starting to leak inside one of the kitchen walls. need to stop that immediately. adding more water is not my first choice.King_County_Downy wrote:

i have a picture of my uncle who lived in northern minnesota many years ago and it shows him on top of the roof with one of those original toro electric blowers.burnzz wrote:

I used to just go up on a ladder and hack it off with a hatchet. Lot of effort, and not the safest but its cheap.

I have no advise for that... sounds like you're in for a big repair bill when this storm is over.
