Also, that shit smell you get. That's not from the city as many believe. It actually comes from that place across the river, New Jersey.

It's actually more localized to Macbeth.

NY is okay, I'd love to hit up NY on a mid summers day and just walk around central park and enjoy the city air...

After a few dozen trips the buildings are just eh.

Inside tip: I find the rockefeller (sp.) buildings view is better than the Empire State building, and it doesnt take over an hour and a shit tonne of lines to get to the top

Heres some pics I took around christmas of last year (Christmas '08)

I have been there a few times now, and visiting again at the end of this year for our 4th time

A few suggestions for you:
Go on the Red Tour bus "Gray Line" it is called. There are some different ticket prices.

If I remember correctly the basic one is a Day-time Hop on Hop off pass following a the same route. You can choose to stay on for the whole tour and they tell you about different areas, of you can hop off at different points, then just catch the next tour bus that comes and then stay on that one.

Another ticket is for the up-town tour and takes you up into Harlem. REALLY good cause you will see areas that you would never have expected (or thought) that you would see. (this one is not hop off)

There is also a night time ticket in which takes you across into Brooklyn in the evening. (this one is not hop off)

Go to Bubba Gump Shrimp Company for dinner. If you have never been before, or even heard about the place, then it is really good
If is just down from the Hard Rock Cafe on Times Square.

Top of the Rock. As you have a lot to squeeze in during the week, you might only get the choice of going up the Empire State or the Rockefeller Center. After being up both, I would recommend going up Rockefeller Center, Top of the Rock. You get a great view of the city, but also you get an AMAZING view of Central Park which you do not get really with the Empire State.

National History Museum. This place is just massive! Really good if you have the time, but it will eat up pretty much your whole day.

Central Park Zoo. If the weather is nice, go in there as it is something completely different from the hustle and bustle of the busy city.

Tick Tock Diner. This place is down on the corner of 8th Ave 34th Street. It was the closest place we could find to a proper "Movie Diner", but the breakfasts area really good. Not cheap though!

If you are watching your cash, then instead of paying for the ferry which takes you over to the Statue of Liberty, then jump on the Ferry which takes you across to Staten Island. It is free, and takes roughly 1hour there and back. But you get a great view of the Statue of Liberty, and it is FREE!

Get up @ 8 a.m. and go to the empire state building, avoid the 3 hour line that's usually there and enjoy the sights from high up
Then go shopping in SoHo and have a burger in broadway cafe (nice place), then go find a fastfood restaurant to get a 2 liter coke and zip on that for an hour. Then get in a tour-bus and see all the main sights from the ground (listen to the tour guide, he'll point out free museums you should go visit, ppl avoid free things in NYC for some reason, so those museums aren't too busy). Then the next day, go up to central park and walk around, then go see rockefellar centre and continue to times square and it's shops...eat at the Hardrock cafe. The next day do the museums the tour-guide mentioned.
Maybe it's obvious now I went to NYC 2 months ago and had only 3 days to do it all ?

[edit] as mentioned above, use the Gray-line ^^ its good

I would advise you to pass by Astroland but I drove around there yesterday and the place looked like a dump after they shut everything down.

Um, this is all I can really think of atm since most of the places have been pointed out: http://www.lowereastsideny.com/

You can also go by ground zero I guess. Not much to see though.

Go to the Empire State Builiding. It wasn't as good as the WTC though, I've been to both. Too bad the WTC is gone now.

Get some sneakers, dress in black and be on your way tbh, explore that shit.

Yeah, too bad...

So, OP, to make this easier on those of us who actually live here, could you tell us when you will be arriving and what you would like to do so we can stop blasting you with ideas?

Do some kayaking on the Hudson. Wassup.

Also, I have a canoe on Sheepshead Bay. Who wants to go boating?

Jihad should come canoeing with me. So I can take him out to the middle of Rockaway Inlet and throw him over board. It's not too far to the shore, but he'll still be exhausted and it will be funny and as I row to safety.

Can I toss you in Hell's Gate? It's right in front of my campus.
