The original HMMWV was cool, and probably did its job decently until it got raped in Iraq. The original H1 was probably cool for its time too, and looks to have kept some good off road capability and stick to what it should be.

But it was the H2/H3 made by GM that was the worst, they basically threw out all off road capability and turned it into the quintessential Soccer mom/Chelsea tractor. Specifically the H2. The H2 is just awful, ruined the reputation of the HMMWV/Hummer (along with the Iraq war)

And it looked like shit.
