I imagine that this may seem really stupid to some of you, but the computer I'll be given in a few months doesn't have a PCI-E x16 slot which is needed to fit any graphics card that has been made over the last five years or so. I'm even desperate enough to buy a PCI-E x1 to x16 extender so it can run something rather than nothing.

I have had my eye of a HD5770 for the past month or so. I found this, which I find to be interesting becasue the card (HD5870) was still running at 75% of its normal power when using x16.

What I'm asking is, would the preformance drop be significantly worse than the 5870? I am aware that the 5870 is significantly more powerful than the 5770, I trust you guys enough to give a good estimate.

Oh yeah, one more thing, I imagine some (if not most) of the replies I will get will be along the lines of "Just buy your own PC which can take the card". Look, I've tried that numerous times. Success rates are low if your father is the kind of person who likes to have the best computer in the house.

you need a new mobo. Chances are it's not even PCIe 2.0 x1 but rather 1.1. That's only half the bandwidth.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
