Just had my last cigarette, I'm really going to try and kick it for good this time. I want to know how other people have tried to quit smoking before, and I want to know what you did to keep your mind off it.

I quit almost two years ago. I started out taking Chantix, its a drug that helps to block the nicotine receptors in your brain. I started hearing some bad stuff about it while I was taking it, so after the first prescription of it, I stopped. From then I just chewed gum and dealt with the withdrawal as best as possible.

I know a friend of mine used to carry a water bottle around with him so when he got the urge to smoke he would drink from that instead. He's quit, but I'm not sure how much of his success is attributable to the bottle. It's worth a shot, anyways.

Good on ya man. Tobacco is worse for you then pot, but look at which one is legal. And I've heard that some people will go through a whole pack of nicotine gum in less then a day when trying to quit.

I only smoked for a few months, I quit by just throwing out my pack and lighter.
I don't think I was physically addicted, however I did form a habit of smoking just walking to and from a place. I still get the urge to smoke one quite often, but I don't give in. Mostly because my girlfriend would leave my tar-smellin' ass in a second if I take it up again... gotta say I do miss having a nice drag.

I know people that smoke herb and ciggs. They quit cigarettes by smoking a bowl everytime they had the craving
I smoked for 6 years, one pack (thats 19 cigarettes here) a day, and when I started coughing up almost black stuff every morning I realized that if I dont stop then I probably wont turn 40. That got me scared and it was enough motivation to quit. I did not have any technique, I just said that it is over and haven't smoked since, and that was one and a half year ago.
Point is that if you WANT to quit, then you will succeed, if you dont want to then you wont.
Besides physical addiction you'll have to deal with mental addicition too. What does that mean? Well, when you are smoking, your hands and mouth are busy, and you get used to that. Thats why many people say to chew gum, because chewing gum keeps your mouth busy but not your hands, and thats why it is enough distraction to some and not for other. Try gum, and if it does not work try something that keeps your hands busy(dunno write a novel, play an instrument, it really is up to you), but it is really important that do something you enjoy doing, something that keeps your hands busy and something that you can immerse in, many people get stuck here because they dont know what to do.
One last thing: I know it sounds easy but there is no way around it: if you really feel the urge to light one, just dont... Thats one of the hardest parts.
Something you should know: the hardest part of quitting for me was when I went to pubs to drink with my friends. Most of them smoke, but that was not a problem for me. But most smoking people know that beer and cigs mix quite well, and I was extremley tempted to bum one off my friends everytime I went to drink beer. I got that sorted out by downing half bottle of beer every time I felt the urge(thus I became shitfaced quite regularly during the quitting process but it had its bright side too ).

I used the patch. Easy as hell. I'd quit before a few times -but the withdraw made more of an asshole than usual. The patch takes the edge off. Was on it for about 4-6 weeks. Don't remember when I quit but it has to have been several maybe 8 years ago? Now I smoke a few choice cigars a year *cough cuban, and a pipe (I have a collection) every blue moon or so.
Patch pro tip: Spot where it is applied to itches for a few minutes upon application. More fun is you will experience vivid dreams beyond yer' imagination. I had a few freaky ones and a few 'freaky' ones. I altered my dosage time to just pre-bed time to maximize the side effect. It was interesting.

Quit two years ago, for the first days its not easy but after that you start to get used to it.
