  • EVGA Classified SR-2 fits two Xeon CPUs for 24 threads

Because f*ck you that's why.

Wow...just wow.

Remember EVGA's seven-GPU motherboard monstrosity, the W555? That experimental beast of a board just got declassified -- and given immediate launch orders. Under the new "Classified SR-2" callsign, the board's layout has hardly changed since CES (though the heatsinks certainly got a makeover) but the big news here is that each of its two CPU sockets will support those fancy new six-core Xeon processors. As you're well aware, two times six is twelve -- and since each of the Xeon 5600's cores can handle 2 threads, you're looking at the basis for a 24-threaded powerhouse for mondo multitasking performance. Factor in enough slots for 4-way SLI, CrossFireX and 48GB of RAM, and it's not hard to figure out why the red-and-black HPTX (15- x 13.6-inches!) creation commands a $600 price point. The only questions are how much a full system will deplete your wallet, and how many fuses your house will blow after pressing the power button.

Correction: Just a note that Intel's Core i7-980X isn't supported here, but the new Xeon 5600 CPUs are.

I'm kinda tempted to go for a crazy PC build. This, couple of GTX480s, watercooling, the whole shebang, ...
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

It can. There are plenty PCIe Xonars

PCIe-1 card will work on those slots?  Yes, noob question.

Awesome. How long until this is in a budget build?

Yep, any PCI-E card will work in and PCI-E slot as long as it fits.  You can run a 16x video card in a 1x slot if you cut the end of the slot so it will go in.

If I had the money, I would build something like that in a heartbeat... I'd have nothing to use it with and nothing to justify the computing power... but that's about as future proof as you can get right there...

If you flash a custom BIOS that sets PCI-E to 1x, then he is right. If you had any idea how PCI-E works, you'd know that.

Oh, I misread, I thought he was joking about cutting the pins of the card

As far as that motherboard goes, it truly is remarkable piece of hardware. I don't need such number crunching power two CPUs would give.

I already have Classified for one CPU, fast ram, and perfectly fine gfx which I'll swap for NV hardware tho real soon. I have been looking at the 980X which would work great on my board, but  although I could BARELY afford it and 2x GTX 480s, I would be financially bankrupt after that.

That said I see nothing that would need 6 cores for next year or 2.

I honestly can't see a general home use for this mobo.  Even for game it is a bit extreme.  However, for places like Dreamworks and other multimedia factions, I can see how this would be beneficial.

This would be more fun as a Nehalem-Ex board.

Fucking hell, 7 x16 slots? I don't even have one.

You could build a mini super computer with one of those things.

This is made more for the home user actually.  Dreamworks and multimedia will use currently available muti-cpu solutions for the stability.  This is a multi-cpu board for the enthusiast.

I could never afford it so it doesn't matter.
