http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/htc- … hone-armo/

Highlights:

-It's got the horsepower of the HD2, and then some
-8MP camera with 720p filming ability
-Front facing camera, presumably for video chatting
-WiMAX (aka 4G) capability

-Android 2.1 with HTC Sense UI
-Ability to be a hotspot

It's fucking awesome. Unless some other company drops a bombshell in the next 3 months, this is gonna be the best phone in the world. WiMAX coverage is still pretty small geographically, but by the end of the year should cover 120 million people (including NYC, San Fran, Boston and DC ). Sprint's 3G network is really fast/reliable as well. And their plans are excellently priced, and their customer service is great.

I came about three times, and I'm gonna start saving money. I'll buy this at the off-contract price if necessary.

Is WiMax some American phenomenon, or have I been living under a rock lately?

The latter

It's a 4G network technology, competing with LTE. It seems more carriers are gonna be going with LTE, but in the US Sprint is the only network to actually have started operating a 4G network.

I wouldn't be surprised if it does at some point... idk why you'd want that over this though.

4G is an advertising ploy, no more.  We don't even have reliable 3G service in most of the country.

Speaking about it being a ploy. I almost always have 3G coverage Tampa/Verizon.

Have any of you guys actually used it? And Ken I have quite reliable 3G service in DC.

@Menzo the majority of the US population is covered with 3G, but sadly the majority of the land isn't.

edit: Engadget seemed impressed with it, including the quality of the streaming (scroll down to 1:57PM, 1:59PM and 2:04PM)

Great, you also live in a tiny insignificant country.  Who sucks now?

I would hope you have good 3G service in DC...it's a major international metropolitan area.  I don't get great 3G coverage here in Orange County at all.  Spotty at best, but that is with Cingular.  4G service is being rolled out nationally in South Korea, but here it's still largely in the works.  Why buy a phone based on a promise of 4G service when most likely that service isn't going to be widely available until after the initial 2 year plan is up?  I'd rather have a phone with reliable 3G coverage to 99% of the serviced area than spotty 4G coverage over 10% of the area.

Ken, these guys aren't dumb-dumbs, the phone supports 3G as well.

3g convo?

What about 3g internet access. Since 4g provides higher speed, I would assume that is its main selling point. Not that I have speed problems on my iphone's 3g.

Then again I think video calling is pretty dumb, so maybe I am not who this is marketed at.

Huh?

That makes utterly no sense. The Evo will naturally connect to a 3G network if no 4G network is available....

Great.  It's advertised as a 4G phone.  That's why I said it's an advertising ploy, no more.

That makes sense, right?

Too big to be practical?  Why do you say that?

The next generations of phones are going to be mini-netbooks capable of streaming real-time voice and video conversations along with data transmissions.  What's practical for a teenager isn't going to mesh with what's practical for a business person.

The 8mp camera sounds mental there are a few phones out there with it already. 4G seems like the only new thing here the phone is a bit too far ahead for the time I'd wait until a few more phones get it and coverage is actually decent. It's like having a 20 inch dick only to pass out when it gets hard.
