honestly, find this documentary on the web, or tune in now. it's fucking fantastic. has all the top dogs in interview.

best thing ive watched in ages, in terms of how interesting it is. it's called 'the battle of chernobyl'. forgive the discovery-brand histrionics.

I would've thought the result of the molten core hitting the water would be a steam explosion similar to what caused the accident in the first place, thus releasing more radioactive bricabrak into the atmosphere. As opposed to like, mushroom clouds and flying fridges.

Could be wrong like.

3-5 Megatons in energy was the estimation. a bit more than a steam-pressure explosion. it would have flattened kiev, 350km away.

weapons grade uranium aint even close to the fucking plutonium isotopes they used in these early russian reactors. im not sure why the explosion would happen because im not a nuclear scientist but the threat was confirmed by Hans Blix (the nuclear committee leader) and gorby himself. so it can't be exaggerative. they immediately reacted by dumping loads of lead into the hole, which plugged it nicely and prevented the disaster- but sent tons of lead radiation into the atmosphere (because it fused with the molten lava) which is still giving ukrainian kids cancer today. small trade-off i suppose. what's funny is that several meters below the entire construction was an aquifer which contained ground-water to supply most of the entire eastern-european region. if the lava had continued seeping through several meters of ground sand/rock, then it would have been another disaster entirely. was a really precarious and fucking haphazard operation, i tell you. those soviets were crazy.

flaming: the fusion of the molten and highly unstable nuclear material with the hydrogen in the water WAS the hypothesized cause for an explosion. stop being such a smarmy cunt. the shit was hardcore. miners called in to clean up afterwards died if they ingested even one grain of radioactive-exposed sand. they didnt give any workers/volunteers any protective equipment, nor any proper information about their dangers. fucking insane. days afterwards there were may day communist parades in ukrainian cities, hundreds of miles away. the radioactive cloud gave thousands of people in the cities cancers and leukemia's that killed off tons and tons of people.
I genuinely do not understand why that would have caused an explosion. I would think if it was strictly Hydrogen maybe it would have been an issue, but water? Can we make water fuse even when we're trying?

hahaha the liquidators and soldiers conscripted to clean it up afterwards all had rifles... to kill the cats and dogs. contact with the animals in the area was equivalent to a cancerous death sentence. imagine your greatest most terrifying foe being the friendly pooch running towards you for a pat, looking for his long-lost owner. that's some serious STALKER shit; mutant hounds!

Cheers zeek.

Flaming, surely the energy of the molten magma would cause the water to evaporate instantly. The energy could cause the bonds to break between the hydrigen and oxygen, leaving hydrogen on its own able to start a reaction with the amount of energy from the molten core?

im not sure whether they were hypothesizing an actual nuclear chain-reaction explosion or an immediate steam-reaction blast...

the documentary just said what it said: the nuclear engineer said it would take a relatively small amount of molten-material making contact with the water to create the "3-5 Megaton explosion" and a radioactive disaster big enough to make Europe a ghostland. workers working on the sarcophagus to cover the reactor-hole could only be in the zone for a few minutes at a time: there's literally video footage of construction workers legging it into the zone, putting some materials down, and then legging it out. the dosage would be fatal for anything over 5 minutes. SERIOUSLY. soviets are fucking CRAZY. 2,500 miners died alone before the age of 40 resulting from the effort to immediately seal the space beneath the molten-lava.
