God, last time I built a computer was 2007. I've been so out of the loop since.

So basically, I'm going off to college in August, and I want both a desktop and a netbook. I need pretty much everything for the desktop (monitor, video card, mobo, CPU etc).

Budget's gonna be about $3000-$3500 for both, but that doesn't mean you have to hit it of course.

Have fun.

Yeah, if you're gonna have a desktop, the only thing you'll use your laptop for is taking notes in class or working on projects or surfing the net, so an eee will be perfect. In fact, laptops in college are highly overrated. I and plenty others got by easily without them.

Depends, a good laptop has saved my day more than few times. Especially when I can write code while on being lecture.

Here's a start:

https://i44.tinypic.com/2a6ukyg.png

If you need a hard-drive, get two of these (currently out of stock) and put them in Raid 0.

Samsung F3 500GB

I'm pretty sure that's everything you'd need, I'm assuming you have keyboard and mouse, speakers, or a headset, and a soundcard which you can butcher from your current PC. There was something about getting a cheap deal on an SSD when you bought the i7 930, didn't read much into it but you might wanna take a look. Here's the links to the parts:

Case
Screen
Graphics
Power Supply
RAM
Motherboard
CPU
CPU Cooling

Now you could drop a little more money into the graphics side of things, and get a 5870, but the 5850 will handle pretty much anything out just now very well. If you chose to get a 5870, I recommend either this for a 1GB version, or this for a 2GB. (I have a HIS 5770, so that's why I chose that brand). Shame they're both sold out currently.

If you want an SSD, try this one, but I think this one had a deal with the i7, not sure, you'd have to look into that.

Don't go and order this right away, there could be a couple of things I have overlooked. Wait for people like Panzer and Max to critique. (I just know Panzer is going to say something about the H50..)

Now, here's the question. I won't be getting this until June, so I'm just prospecting and scouting at this point. Are there any planned mega releases coming out?

Well, only Fermi, nVidias biggest ever anticipated launch.. Don't worry, it's absolutely terrible. On scale with the iPad.

Well, I'll look into that.

Now... Netbook? That's a necessity. Although for what you built I could even get a laptop.

Get a laptop with at least 14" screen. You'll appreciate having a larger keyboard to type on. Toshiba or Lenovo would be my recommendations.
2007?? thats not old!!

why not just upgrade some of your parts??

my build is 2005!!!! parts vary.

I like to start from scratch.

Also forgot to mention I'm gonna need Win. 7 (sorry, I buy my software ), so figure that into the price.

If you provide a .edu email address you can get W7 home premium for like $35. Just have an OS installed then do that new copy trick.
Most universities also have student licenses.

Well, I'll be getting my Pace email at orientation (which is right before graduation - when I get my graduation money), so that's perfect.

Danke.

Yeah I was gonna say...

Check to see if your school is part of the MDSNAA (or something like that). I got XP Pro, Vista Business Pro, W7, 64- and 32-bit versions all for free

Yeah definitely check this out. UT's engineering department has all of that for free, but business did not

If you need office 2007 look for "The Ultimate Steal" it's office 2007 ultimate for like $65. All you need is a .edu email address.
