Inb4 bevo posts a "build me a new rig" thread
Sooo my mobo is dead, and my PC is 3.5years old, so I'm thinking it's time for a new rig. My budget is $1k or so let's say, and I'd like a complete build. I might consider using my current case if it saves a fair amount of cash.

What I have now:

8gig RAM (which from what my friend tells me is really old)
2x Dual Core AMD 285s
9800 GTX

What I'm looking for:

Something that makes BFBC2 look like sex, a decent soundcard would be nice for a change and I'm looking for a new USB headset as well. I'd also like a quieter rig because my current rig is stupidly loud and it pisses me off.

Lastly: I completely suck at this hardware shit, so I have no idea what I'm doing. This will be the first rig I'll build myself.

Any chance you can salvage your disc drive and are you an audiophile cause if not you dont really need a sound card.

Disc drives (2 of em) are tip top afaik. Also that case is hella spensive... If cases are that much I may try to stick with my current one.

4g of RAM? Is that enough?

Thinking about dropping the price range to 800 or so, seems a bit more manageable.

4 GB is plenty, assuming you're not doing massive amounts of photo and video editing. (Hell, even when editing a DVD rip, I was only using 3 of my 4 and things were chugging along smoothly).

you wanted a quite case how quite, that one is supposedly very quite and has decent/good cooling.
Edit are your disc drives ide or sata

If the computer was brand new 3 and a half years ago I'd presume SATA.

Yeah, there's no way you're going to max out 4GB, let alone 6. 6 is only really necessary if you're running many virtual machines (Max), or doing heavy number crunching, or video/photo editing etc.

Imo, if you can stretch the budget quite a large amount, go with what I recommended Poseidon.

https://i44.tinypic.com/2a6ukyg.png

But that is quite a bit over the budget, and double the revised budget, although it does have stuff you wouldn't need.

I'd need to see what you have currently so we can see what you can salvage from your current rig, for example PSU, RAM, etc.

I am pretty sure u can fit at least HD 5850 for that budget. I'll throw something together a bit later today, busy with coding atm...

I hav no idea what I have (total hardware) and I assume dxdiag doesn't tell you stuff like power supply. I'll try to make a more comprehensive list of what I've got.

edit: Okay, the case seems more reasonable if it's quiet.. I guess it still looks really pricey

Current case is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6811129021
Both of my drives are SONY DVD RW AW-Q-170A
I can grab a copy of windows 7 from the campus comp store for $30
My PSU is an Enermax Galaxy 1000w Quad-SLI ATX PSU
Keyboard/Mouse are A-OK but my headphones are falling apart (Actually the USB end is falling apart), I've had to reconnect it with the little metal stems all the fricking time and it sometimes decides you pulled a little bit to the left and they'll stop working midgame.

Ummm. HDD is not a big concern, I have 500 on my laptop, 500 on external USB powered and another 500 that's wall-powered. 500 or so is more than plenty but I don't see much differentiation between the sizes. I thought about a small SSD for windows and a few other things but that seems to blow my budget completely out of the water. This sucker will have to total under 1k at the most, and 800 sounds like a much more manageable price if the rig still fits the qualifications (quiet, runs bfbc2 great, etc).

I dont know about great for under 1k or for any price but ok on high dx10 seems reasonable for 1k. any chance you can get the entire serial number for the psu the one that starts with cha the fan protector seems to be blocking some of it. Also reusing a psu if its over 3 years old isnt a great idea.

cause it has a higher power consumption than i5 750... I also read that i5 is a bit better with games than amd 965
see my post above but forget about the ram.

e.: but again... maybe some have better knowledge about the amd 965. Thats why I asked
