me and my bro are thinking about getting my dad a setup for this season since he doesnt really have a proper rod and reel.

we were thinking about getting a g loomis etc for him but he doesnt go too often and from what ive heard theres some pretty solid setups for not too much.

so how is a shakespeare ugly stik lite 6'6" model

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ … amp;Go.x=0

and a shimano sienna (100/4 or should we go 140/4?)

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ … amp;Go.x=0

most likely lake fishing with 3 or 4 pound test.

any recommendations appreciated.

ugly stiks are not only great cheap shit but will last you the rest of your fishing career

oh and shimanos (any) are great reels.  although the ugly stik rod + reel combos aren't that bad it would be best to get a quality reel like that

love love love my ugly stick. I have an older version of the Shimano Sienna reel, great reel, definitely worth the money I spent on it.

St. Croix also make a great rod, I use that for perch and bass. My ugly stick I use for salmon, walleye, pike, etc.

edit: I would prolly go with the 140/8 reel with front drag, 4lb test breaks too easily, I would put 6 or 8lb on there. This reel is a little bigger and can hold more.

alright looks like we'll go with this setup then.

for the shimano sienna, is the 100yd/4lb test fine?

they all have front drag dont they? or is the SN2500RD* the one with front drag?

wouldnt the 140/8 be a bit too big for the rod though?

The ones with the * after it are rear drag, don't get that, its a pain in the ass. And no, the reel wouldn't be too big.. I have a 200/10 on my 6'6'' Ugly dick, it's the size of the spool that changes.

I mean, if you're afraid of getting too big of a reel, the 100/4 would still hold 6lb test, it just wouldn't be as much.

What are you even fishing for?

@RWS, actually maybe ill just go with the 140/4 lol.

we'll be fishing for lake trout and some river possibly. i usually go 2 or 3 lb test and ive handled around 6 pound trout somewhat easily as long as you can play it out properly and use the drag. any line above even 4 really and they get spooky.

most of the stockers dont even go past 2 pounds and theres occasionally a 4 pound alper.

Ugly stiks are epic.

Have seen one fished with after being run over by a Land Cruiser. They do not break. Ever.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.
