O.K., so some Mexican in LA who know some shit about computers decided to hack my Paypal account and buy an HP computer for ~$1200 on 4/6, putting my bank account to ~-$180.  I disputed this with Paypal on 4/7 when I found out, the next day the money was sitting in my Paypal account so I sent it back to my bank account and it still hasn't appeared as of 4/11 and it looks like the charge went through anyway.  It also says Paypal is asking HP about the transaction as of three or four days ago and they still haven't replied.  What happens if they never reply?  Do I just lose my money just because they wouldn't reply?

Where would the guy be able to ship the computer to? He would have to provide an address or PO Box, but either way it would be tied to his name, right?

He changed my secondary shipping address on the Paypal to somewhere in Alhambra California and changed everything else to match that except my name.

Thinking about giving /b/ the address so they spam him to hell

You'll get your money back, it could just take anywhere from a couple of business days to a couple of months. Usually a week should have it sorted.

Phone paypal. It's the easiest way of dealing with it.

Definitely.

Though I have had Paypal screw me over before, thankfully it was only for about $20

Googled his address, saw him walking up the driveway, looked like a vato.  Plus there were Civics all over the street.

forget paypal..  call your bank.  they have a fraud department specifically for these situations.  you'll get your money back faster.  and don't waste your time trying to find this dude.  he probably is doing construction on some house as an illegal, and will have stuff shipped there so he can get it whenever.

It was on streetview on Google maps.  It might not be him but it's pretty safe to say it's another Mexican, I don't think the LA suburbs are particularly diverse like that but I don't know for sure.  There's not much I hate more than someone who thinks everything should be given to them even though they did nothing to deserve it trying to steal from me.

I already called the bank and they said I had to go through Paypal first.  I think right now it's already completely in Paypal's hands anyway.

what a bunch of pricks.  make sure your bank knows you'll be closing your account after this gets squared away.

lol, you make it sound like they were dicks about it.  I think they said it was actually a legal thing that they can't do anything with it until I go through Paypal first.  It makes sense being the the money was going through Paypal and not quite directly from my bank account.  But I can somewhat see where you're coming from.

I really hope the money comes back soon, Suntrust's website is fucking retarded and says no account exists whenever I try to turn off paper statements and I don't want want to hear it from my mom when all that money isn't there, she'll make it my fault even though it was stolen.

That, or as steelie34 said it would be better to call the bank. My folks had some credit card fraud earlier this year, and it took a lot of follow up bullshit to get it properly sorted. Get names of people you talk to, and all that crap, so that if they take longer than they say you can hound the crap out of them...

good luck

Edit: didn't read the last post. Hmm.. same deal, just hound paypal..

it just sucks that your bank wont take care of this for you.  they will have a little more sway with paypal's people than you would, and would probably have it fixed by now.  make sure they don't tack any fees or overdraft charges on you since this was fraud.  it's funny how when something bad happens, you are on your own to fix it, even though you pay those assholes to protect your money.  it makes me want to open an account at matress of america.

calling paypal would be a much more assuring way of handling things. plus it would make you seem much more legitimate than just email.

if i lost 1200 bucks to a scammer i would be on the phone with someone for sure.

I had overdraft protection for the initial theft, but then I made like a 2$ purchase from iTunes and was charged a 36$ overdraft fee.  I'll try to get them to refund the overdraft fee(should cover the USB drive I just replaced) and possibly even reinstate the overdraft protection if possible since I didn't do it.

They refunded the overdraft fee too.

And btw all the money minus the overdraft fee is back in my account as of this morning
