I have this pretty old laptop, a Dell inspiron 6000 with windows XP, that I recently reformatted. Used to be if I closed it it would immediately go into sleep mode, and if I opened it it would instantly wake up again. Now when I close it, it stays on, the screen goes off, and it doesn't wake up when I open it again.

My main PC, windows 7, also doesn't wake up from sleep if I select S3 mode in the BIOS, and doesnt turn off the fans if I select S1 mode.

I've done a research but I can't figure it out

graphics drivers updated?
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I presume you've played with these settings? I cannot recall if XP has similar settings.

My old PC never used to go to sleep properly - the fans and case LEDs would stay on. I then upgraded from XP to Vista and it started working.

If windows doesn't allow you to select "go to sleep" that's usually because the GPU drivers are wrong. Now I'm stumped

I downloaded the wrong video drivers for my laptop from Dell's website, I got the right ones elsewhere and it works now

My PC still won't wake up from sleep mode even though I'm using catalyst 10.3 and have had this problem on all the previous versions too

I also have W7 on my PC, after half an hour has passed with no activity, it goes to sleep and when I press a button, it wakes up.

I havent changed the settings on it, since I installed it and it looks like this on my PC, don't know if it helps?

i never understood why that function even exists.  does it really take that much longer to cold boot?

When the computer's in sleep mode:

- Press power button to turn on, or open laptop lid
- Wait 1 second
- Enter password
- Start using computer

No wait time at all. And on my PC all I have to do is move my mouse, that wakes it up.

cold boot, 1-1,5 minutes until you're completely ready
resume from standby, a second or two if you turn off having to enter password/login again

I upgraded my ud3r's bios, despite using the exact same settings it works now.

It is nice being able to power your computer on when you're lying in bed, in just a few seconds, with a click of your wireless mouse....

Yeah I find myself reaching for my laptop before I even get out of bed, considering it only takes a second to resume from standby anyway
