I went into msconfig and disabled pretty much all the startup stuff. Haven't had a bluescreen yet. Will let you know, I suppose.

well that's actually an interesting scenario... it indicates that your issue may in fact be a software problem instead of hardware, or at least some component of hardware that is only active when it is being used by some program you have disabled. the next step is to enable them one by one until you find a culpritSonderKommando wrote:

I'm also getting an error while trying to install windows updates, though my bluescreens seem to have temporarily dissipated. I think I'll bite the bullet and box it up tomorrow.

Do I need to do a reinstall? If so, how would I go about doing a good format on both of my drives before I install windows?
Do I need to put washers between my mobo and case? My last motherboard didn't have anything between them, and the threads are about a third of an inch away from the metal baseplate. I've heard a few people talk about putting washers in but I don't really see the need with that much clearance. Is there something I'm missing?

I would definitely reinstall. During the setup, it should ask you which partition you would like to install on. Delete any existing partitions and format "quick".Bevo wrote:

Yes. Fo sho. If you don't use the spacers, the ports in the back probably won't line up correctly and the CPU fan probably won't clamp down properly. You'll have to pull everything back out and do it again. Been there, done that. it sucks. I would recommend using them for sure.Bevo wrote:

Mobos usually come with lil brass risers, obviously you don't need them if the mobo tray has risers built in.

Bevo, you should probably zero out the drives using a hard drive cleaner like active@ kildisk or diskwipe you can create a bootable disk with these programs. Then reinstall windows on the clean drive. You do need to make sure you have the brass risers/standoffs between the motherboard and the motherboard plate in your case. also, you should have small felt like spacers over the motherboard screw holes and the fastener heads. Most motherboards and cases are shipped with these items.

Yea those are risers/standoffs. However, you might want to get some thin almost felt/paper like washers to put between the fastener heads and your board. I think Active@ killdisk will be good since you can create a bootable USB. boot into bios and set 1st boot device to usb, follow the on screen instructions to wipe the drive. I don't think I CBA to go out and try to find them. Maybe the next time I go by a hardware store. I've been working with computer-like devices for a while at work and I have a pretty good idea of how hard you need to screw stuff in to mobos.

I wouldn't worry too much about the drive cleaners unless you have a way to slave up the hard drive to a good working machine (You would install the program and run it from there. Even so, doing a regular format during windows setup will do (mostly) the same thing. The issue you may run into and why he's suggesting this is that your new instalation of windows might see some of those old files and decide to use them. It's rarely the case but I have seen previous/old folders show up on a fresh install. But doing a full format should zero out your HD. ('Quick' just deletes the indexes but saves you about an hour).
