PC Authority recently put the latest edition of Apple's sleek silver classic through a series of torture tests, and found that running Cinebench could cause the CPU temperature to climb over 100 degrees Celsius.

In all fairness to Apple, I've never had a Windows laptop that could do that.

floppy, what in the fuck are you talking about?

nothing new about burning macbooks?

what about the sony vaio's that were recalled - over 350,000 units - because of defective batteries that caused serious burning and explosions?

macs do not have a brand-based commitment to being hot or running at above-average temperatures

shut the fuck up for once with your boring-ass anti-apple bullshit. you're a broken record that transcended the state of even being broken circa: 1998. non, nein, no.

For once though, he is completely right.

Most Apple computers, barring the Mac Pro, run at temperatures that I would consider dangerously hot. Typical load temps for the CPU of an Apple laptop are around 70-80C.

while Apple bashing is always fun, Intel did put 105°C as the Thermal Spec for the 32nm mobile i7s.

everything except iphone is ugly?

erm hello, sexiest gadget ever made (in my own opinion, of course)

also i have a modded, top-spec version of the above sat on my lap

it runs a lot cooler than my sony vaio, which is of the equivalent performance-price range

rarely ever gets hot enough or put under enough load to jack in the extra case/hd fans. as i said... cheshire cat.

That's because it's only a MacBook (lower spec + made of nicely insulating plastic so you can't tell how hot they're getting).

MacBook Pros and Airs are a very different design.

BTW - be careful not to put 7200rpm hard drives in there, they can break it.

Has the plastic on the front of your top case broken yet? Just below the trackpad?

no, i covered it in a palm-rest area protector because i didnt want to do any sweat/grease damage to the plastic case

granted it's lower spec than a macbook pro, and doesn't have the aluminium unibody...

lots of other laptop brands/manufacturers use composite/poor heat conducting materials, too. i imagine if you put the same hardware (especially the GPU/CPU) in their cases, they'd get pretty fucking toasty fer your testes too. isnt it a pretty much ubiquitous design-flaw of laptops? they get hot. the heat exhausts and hot components are inches away from your lap. inescapable, really. faulty batteries, fires and explosions have been reported and seen in lithium technology and poor-manufacturing standards across all the brands... it's not exactly as if macbooks = incendiary devices. it's just pointless stereotyping/brand profiling again, drawn across the same battlefield lines as it always has been... that tedious apple vs. non apple opposition.

But the simple fact is, Apple laptops run hotter than most of their competitors. I'm extremely familiar with the design of Apple laptops (not so much the new i7 ones, which I haven't had a chance to pull apart yet) and typically they run damn hot.

You see an awful lot of fried processors, CPU and GPU, on Apple logic boards.

cant really argue against the evidence... not sure about overall figures though.

im sure someone working in repairing windows-laptops would report a lot of fried and overheated logic boards, too.

i consider heat more of a problem universal to laptops as opposed to just particularly terrible thermals/exhausts on apple macs. not to say their own design particularly makes it any better, though.

I've never noticed my laptop get extremely hot other than when its put on a blanket or something thats covering its heat exhaust port.  Of course, its not top-spec either.

I've done both - don't anymore (now I do corporate and retail support only). Apple laptops run hotter in general, but there certainly are exceptions - lots of the old Dell P4 laptops ran blazing hot.

That's not to say the cooling solutions on Macs are bad. They're very well designed and pretty effective. Everything is just too compact in lots of these machines.

This is why manufacturers strayed away from the term 'laptop' and adopted 'netbook', presumable to avoid lawsuits involving scalded legs
