The tax is ineffective because it fails in it's stated mission. People don't quit cigarettes if they raise the tax by a dollar every few years. If you hit them with a $10 increase in one year, then yes, they might quit but that's not the way they do it because it would kill their tax revenue.
"A perfectly fair and well reasoned tax. Which is, I imagine, supported by the majority of people in the state. That's how democracy works."
Good, you stated it for me. Mob rule. Tyranny of the Majority. This is nothing more than a money grab against a defenseless minority.
Congrats Berster. Without irony, you just pointed out every single flaw in a democratic system. Instead of one Stalin forcing you to conform to his ideal, you get 300 million Stalin's all forcing you to conform.

Yes. He's entirely caught up on what he perceives to be corporate rule in politics. For some misguided reason he thinks that pure democracy will fix this. The guy with the most money will always have the biggest say and frankly, that's the way it should be because he's got the most to lose with incompetent politicians in office.Spark wrote:

Aside from this, it puts us all at the mercy of the wishes and whims of whatever the most agitated among us can convince the rest of us to go along with. Whether it's stringing up black people, gassing Jews, castrating homosexuals etc. Convince the majority to go along with it and it's law. No logic or reason needed, just a stirring emotional speech designed to prey on your irrational fears.

He didn't ask if mob rule was good or bad.
He asked if it was preferable to oligarchy.

HE didn't sask a question, you did, and that question was is he wrong ( if mob rule is best). That is a question you need to think about and decide for yourself. Personally I say no, a mob uslually does not tote the banner of reason or law. but your opinion may differ.Spark wrote:

That wasn't a mob...It was a one on one encounter where the criminal lost. Nothing more nothing less.ruisleipa wrote:

Now tell me where in that quote he suggested that mob rule was positive.A tyranny of the majority is still preferable to a tyranny of minorities, which is the state of our current system.

I said he is a mob rule supporter, IE given the 2 choices, he would prefer mob rule over our current system, which is a system of law, not a system of tyranny by minorities.

Is "free market" capitalism the same as true capitalism? Government intervention does not only occur under Democratic leadership.... aren't corporate subsidies just as intrusive to the free market as regulation and control?

Well.... thank god American fascism is so different than some other forms I guess.
no such thing as true capitalism. never really has been. people that think they are "conservatives" usually seem to be only against social welfare but have no problem with corporate welfare.Spearhead wrote:
