So I'm going on a 3 day hiking trip along the Appalachian Trail with my brother and two friends in a couple weeks and frankly I have nothing. I made a list of stuff I think I will need. Am I missing anything?

Pack (got an Army surplus ALICE pack with frame)
Tent (got a 1 man tent)
Sleeping bag
Sleeping mat (again, Army surplus)
Pillow
First Aid Kit
Flashlight
550 cord
Knife + Hatchet combo from Gerber
Folding shovel
Poncho
Compass
3 liter water bladder
Plate/Knife/Fork
Boots
4 pairs hiking socks

Clothes, bug spray, sunscreen and food separate.

550 cord is parachute rigging cord (tensile strength of 550 lbs, hence the name )

Flashlight is LED and the battery is supposed to last 20 hours.

Water purifier is being carried by one of my friends and I'm a smoker so I always have a lighter.

I'll bring spare batteries and a box of matches though. Glucose and salt tablets sound like a good idea too since I'm prone to heat exhaustion.

Best one is the meat loaf and potatoes. Eat the meatloaf first, pour the gravy in the potatoes, mix it up, yum. Or anything with jalapeno cheese spread in it is a winner.

Son, I've been a pack a day smoker for a decade. I can light a fire in a hurricane with those things. Trust me

seriously don't. they light every time, but i'd still want a backup. some wicks will burn fuel at a fucking stupid rate, the flints can be awful etc etc. fine to have, but if you're going to be away from civ for more than a couple of days you want a backup.

I have both a Zippo and a Bic and I actually prefer the Bic. It always lights assuming there isn't too much wind. Whereas the Zippo seems to never light when I actually need it. Only when I'm sitting there bored.

I kinda blame it on the crappy fuel I bought for it.

I've had several zippo's and aside from the cool doing tricks factor, they're terrible lighters. Flints break, they need fluid, the hinge breaks etc.

more likely to be a shit wick. if it can spark, its not the flint, and zippos will run on...pretty much anything. fuel/flint/wick are the only things that can go wrong. i've had mine for 6 years now, tough little bastard.

Yeah I guess it's the wick then. The flint's fine because it sparks like a power plant, and it'll light pretty reliably right after I add fuel.

it's been doing this since I bought it. I trimmed it once and it still did the same thing. Right after I add fuel it lights reliably. After like 20 minutes, it still seems to light reliably. Then I go out with some buddies, decide I want a cigarette, and the damn thing won't light.

idk about america, but flints i can get at any newsagent, but wicks i generally have to go to an actual tobacconist. it's worth asking at your nearest corner shop though
