So I have 6 GB of RAM installed and it was working fine until today.
Now its only recognizing 2GB of RAM...what the fuck?

I have Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

Specs

2.8 GHz (E5462) Octo-Core Intel Xeon Harpertown
6GB, well now apparently only 2
Ati Radeon HD5870 1GB

Actually this reminds me. My flatemate has a new mobo, new cpu and new ram. His 32 bit version of Win 7 in task manager only recognises 1.5gb, but it's a 2gb stick. CPUZ recognises it as 2gb though.

Bit weird, have no idea as to why it does this.

how much memory had "No Errors Found"?

the win 7 memory tester is software - we need to go into the bios now . . .

Well the thing did only 2 tests, so i guess its really jsut recognizing 2 RAM sticks?

to get to the bios, you will have to hit the 'delete' key or 'F2' or whatever - it should tell you (very briefly) on bootup . . .

"Press F2 to Enter Setup" or similar

does OSX also only see 2GB? How much does the BIOS/EFI report? How much does memtest86+ report? Have you tried each stick individually?

Okay so, My Mac Pro has a special tray thing for RAMs.
https://img.hexus.net/v2/guides/Mac/Unbox/IMG_0758-big.jpg

So i just put the 4GB RAM on top and the 2GB RAM on the bottom and now its showing my 4GB of RAM.
So there is something wrong with the bottom tray.

Is there anything I should be trying to get back the missing 0.5G of RAM?
It's a brand new stick (Kingston 2gb @ 1333) in a brand new mobo (gigabyte MA785GT)

Open the task manager and go to performance.

Check to see the memory graph, how much is in use and how much is max, it might be using all 2GB.

Thats't the thing though. In task manager it reads as ~1.5GB total.
In CPUZ it reads as 2GB. It's a single stick.

Sounds like a slot is broken. If it is, RMA.

It happens. Have you tried swapping the boards round to check if it's the board or the socket on the logic board itself?

Hope you've got warranty on that or it could be pricey...

But wouldn't it just show usage, rather than less total RAM?
