Alright guys I've tried google and that I can't seem to get no straight answers. I want to create a partition on an external drive trouble is I already have files on this drive. Normally I would just copy the files to my computer. However I've not got enough harddrive space.

So is it possible to partition the drive without formatting it?

I've partitioned a drive with data already on it.

The built in manager in Vista and 7 can also partition drives.

While it's possible, I've been told that it's somewhat risky. These may be completely unfounded, and I've never tried myself, it still be safer to find a friend or two and back up the data on their drives before you try repartitioning your drive.

I've partitioned a drive to install a 2nd O/S on it.

How is that risky?

Happens all the time.

Not risky at all.

First shrink, then add.

Computer management -- then Disk Managament.

I use Acronis DiskManager and it works.

Depending on where you want the partitions to be, it may take a while though.

If you want to put a partition in BEFORE all the data currently on the drive, it'll take a long time because it has to physically move the data, whereas if you want to cut off some space at the end of the drive, it'll be a quick enough process.
