I'm glad I pre-ordered this while I had money.... I've played trough the campaign tutorial in the demo twice now. On second playtrough I conquered all the provinces accessible.

Yet to win the historic battle, that one is enjoyably hard
Gotten close several times. But in the end, the crappiness of my ashigaru forces is no match for the samurai troops of the enemy.
Closest I got was when all Tokagawa Ieyasu had left was 6 bodyguards and the traitors had 1 battered unit of yari samurai XD

I've read a lot of people are whining about technical problems, but I'm surprised at how smooth the demo runs for me. ^^

And yea, 6gb for a demo, lol. And still they cut away a lot of stuff to take down it's size, that's why there are only 3 battles you can command in the tutorial, and all of em are scripted.

Managed to get a rank5 Ninja and a rank5 general, to bad several of the higher tier skills are unavailable in demo
Love the rpg elements.
The wait untill March 15 is going to be slow >.<

First time playing the battle got my ass kicked, retried by charging full front and still got my ass kicked. Third time, used more tactics, got close to defeating the main force and then the other guy betrayed me and got my ass kicked. Fourth time sent the general on a lonely charge.
Loving the graphics, loving the art work, loving the game. Can't WAIT!

ps. kinda hard to get back to melee after playing Napoleon and Empire for a long time.

For 6 Gigs, I spent an awful lot of time waiting for the tutorial guy to shut up or watching films. I can already tell that I'm certainly better at Empire than this game. Got creamed in that historical battle trying to move my troops from the start position to where I want them.

i was disappointed by the graphics... the landscape and stuff has shabby textures. nowhere near as epic looking at the 'in-game' trailer footage .

(max possible settings for the demo, aa forced in control panel)

they reduced the textures I think in the demo as one of the ways to cut down on it's size

I would have rather been able to run a skirmish battle than a cookie-cutter historical one in the demo. Uninstalled after victory.

e: Just for kicks, I would love to be able to pit a S2TW army against a NTW army.

Oh, I didn't even think about that. Melee kind of blows by comparison.

N/E still made good use of melee in surprise flanking by cavalry. Besides which, you can still use archers in S2.

yeah what are you talking about, melee is way more fun. pewpew just becomes a stand-still static borefest.

then why bother playing total war with guns if the best part is the melee

Because some TW's are more focused on melee than others? I like both, so am not affected either way.

I really like E:TW, but there is definitely something to be said for bloody melee battles...

In the demo videos online, they zoom in for up-close shots of the action, which I hardly ever actually take the time to do when I am playing Empire, but always enjoyed doing in Medieval and Rome:TW (despite the crappier graphics).

The Total War design just seems perfectly suited for massive-scale melee.

Is a Rome remake next?  I would normally be against studios lazily rehashing old games, but this is one series where I wouldn't really have a problem with essentially all the old games being re-done, so long as they keep refining the experience.

I was kind of hoping for a TW game that addresses the older empires.

There's just less strategy involved with melee once the armies meet. Yeah, you send your cavalry around the flanks and break the enemies morale but that gets old after a while. Maybe the AI in S2 will actually be passably difficult without having to give them double morale over the player.

yea.... as opposed to "you'll line your guys up over there, and I'll line mine over here. Remember to wear your brightly colored clothes so you are easy to see and aim at. Then both sides start firing at each other for a while with crappy guns until one side is dead. There might be some actual action if our fancy-looking cavalry guys do a bit of flanking, but don't keep your hopes up."
