Make sure to have some goop too.
I would have said Phenom II X6 (yes they exist and are still cheaper than your average i5), but as your mobo is 2+ you can't do that
Seriously, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems you really want to replace the following parts:
1. CPU
2. Mobo
3. GPU
Practically, just get a new comp and re-use your case and PSU.

I was gonna do that, was all ready to go i7, X58, and a new mobo, but it's so expensive compared to just a new processorLai wrote:

True, and it will always cost thát much money, but relatively it will not be that expensive anymore compared to just a new CPU+Mobo+GPU. The only thing you might really cut spendings on in new RAM, though I'm guessing you'd want to upgrade from DDR2 to DDR3 if you're getting a new mobo anyway.CammRobb wrote:

Yeah I'de need to buy new ram as well. I have 3gb of DDR2 (single-channel) in my rig atm, I want to upgrade that to 4gb of dual channel DDR2, which will be about £90Lai wrote:

Oof,.. in that case you definitely want to get a new PC, if you have to upgrade your RAM for £90 anyway. For about €120 you can get 4Gb of Dual-Channel DDR3 memory,.. that's about the same price.CammRobb wrote:

pHENOM ii 940?
Yes the older Phenom's were backwards compatible, meant to bridge the gap. However, they are discontinued. You'll have a hard time finding any Phenom from the 9X0 series (as opposed to the 9X5 series). Newegg seems to have a few is stock though,.. and it happens to be a X4 940 "Black Edition":GR34 wrote:

Cammrob, that would be a massive improvement over your Athlon X2. There are a few potholes though:
1. Though these CPU's were designed to fit AM2(+) mobo's, some mobo manufacturers simply did not supply a supporting BIOS. No technical reason, just epic failure on the mobo manufacturer's side. You'd want to make sure your mobo supports these CPU's. Even when they do they will probably not run at maximum CPU efficiency (individual cores cannot be clocked separately etc.).
2. These CPU's are much less energy efficient then those of the 9X5 series. They'll easily draw twice the amount of power, so make sure your PSU is up to it.
Gonna upgrade to a 5770, and a new processor. Ram will follow at a later date. Still can't figure out which proc to get
Have you looked into the 9X0 series we discussed above?CammRobb wrote:

That one you linked to on Newegg is only £85...do they ship to uk?

One other question.
Currently I have a Zalman Titan HSF, will this work with a new AM2+ cpu?

Give them a call, sometimes if you ask for it specifically they do. Otherwise check place like Amazon.COM, and check out the alternative listed sellers. Just try and place an order with any of them, sometimes they do ship to the UK, even if they say they don't. You'll get a notice when they don't. Also, many of them are smaller businesses or private sellers, so you can probably contact them and work something out.CammRobb wrote:

What would be the best 5770 to get?

This one, though you might be able to get it somewhere cheaper. They go for about €150 in Holland so you could try for £120 or so.

I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

I work in shipping/receiving for a smaller company and shipping internationally is not only pricey as fuck, but it's a pain in the ass. I'd seriously doubt if you'd save any money doing it that way.Lai wrote:

That's still pretty descent. Not as good as the other stuff mentioned in this thread, but not nearly as expensive either.CammRobb wrote:

Depends I guess, I have had processor sized items send to me from the States before for around $10 - $13, with very little hassle I might add.Bevo wrote:

One guy tried to get a QX9770 shipped in from US for much cheaper than it would have costed over here. Didn't exactly go like he planned...
Customs checked the goods and slapped 20% VAT and on top of that 30% fine for trying to transfer valuable goods without VAT added.
After that the CPU wasn't so cheap... csutoms didn't buy it was a gift with value under 50 bucks or what is the limit lol...

i made the assumption you have the Crosshair II which is AM2+. Did they make an earlier AM2 only version version?
sort for CPU
pick AMD Phenom (why they don't have a separate list for Phenom/Phenom II like the Athlons... )
pick AMD Phenom II X4 940
then it list all the ASUS boards compatible with the Phenom AM2+ x4 940 and their respective bios
