Hey Techies.

I'm building an HTPC! I have an e8400, 4gb of DDR2 ram, an nForce 650i SLi, a Radeon x300, a few 120 watt PSUs, some 80gb hard drives, etc.

I figure I only really need a new video card and power supply, as well as some more storage.

Any suggestions on parts to get? I'm looking to keep it under $300.

Are you planning on using it a DVR, just to hold movies or pull files off a network (makes a huge difference on what size hard drive you need) and will be soley HTCP or any gaming at all?  If it's purely HTPC I'd look for a cheap lower end 4000 series ATI (if you need HDMI) as they can be had for ~$30 and have built in sound for the HDMI connector.

minimal gaming, no dvr, and most of the stuff I watch on it will be streaming from my other computers or netflix.

Forgot to mention i'd also like a Blu-Ray drive.

And I can do DVI.

e8400 is optimal for low power consumption for sure

Here's a start for you. didn't know if you needed to burn cd/dvd with the drive so I just picked a reader to save a few.  Other might be able to chime in and help but it's a start.  You can probably get a smaller hard drive and maybe a lesser GPU to up the blue ray to a burner combo.  Also that rig will run fine on a 400CX is like $30 after rebates.

I'd recommend the Western Digital 5400rpm 'green' drives for storage. They aren't very fast, but they're a bit cheaper then the 7200 ones, and dead silent too. I had a 2TB one in an external HDD case for a while - if the case didn't have an activity LED, I wouldn't have known if it was switched on or not.

Might be worth investing in a passive GPU cooler and a silent CPU cooler too.
