Hitler regretted Mein Kampf, it was shite and made him seem like a lunatic.Uzique wrote:
ooooh loan you're CONTROVERSIAL!!!!
there are far more offensive and morally reprehensible books than mein kampf. the prose in mein kampf is tortured and useless - hitler it seemed, failed as bad as a writer as he failed as an artist. not a very creative person. goebble's diaries, on the other hand... now that man could write. elegant and beautiful. a true hero.
His second book on foreign policy would have been more interesting however.
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

im not the one posting book covers
Tu Stultus Es
reading a hess biography helps in this case
The book was dictated by hitler, containing a lot of ideas based of those of nietzsche, it was typed up by hess and maurice, with hess helping hitler to write it. It was then edited by a jesuit priest (forgotten the name) who was killed in the night of the long knives. that about sums it up...cl4u53w1t2 wrote:

there's a pretty new book stating that hitler didn't dictate it to heß. but i am not convinced
dont care

haha, eleven bravo is becoming 11 bravo
It IS patronizing, but doesn't really affect the book much or series itself. Still, I'm willing to bet that just as many British kids (by ratio) had no idea what a philosopher's stone was as they thought American kids would. After all, isn't that why the book explains the concept?Bertster7 wrote:

I never really got why they changed it to that for Americans? Seems a tad patronising.
What it was was a marketing decision. Ironically, it was probably a good one.
It would've been more appropriate to change the name completely, like they did for the French release (Harry Potter a L'ecole Des Sorciers). At least that made sense.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

Sorceror's stone doesn't mean anything. It is a stupid and pointless title. Whereas philosopher's stone is intriguing (to those who don't know what it is) and sorceror's school is descriptive.
Obviously it was a marketing decision, it just seems stupid and patronising to me.
Although not as bad as when the awesome game Little Big Adventure was renamed Relentless for the US market - WHY!?!?
i can't believe you guys are arguing over the title of a j.k. rowling book being 'patronizing'.
the entire texts are patronizing. reading her prose makes me feel like she's asking us all to gather around her knees for a story-time at nursery.
fuck that.

exactly...
adults talking about it being patronizing is a bit of a moot-point, really.

The Souls of Black Folk - W.E.B. Du Bois
Native Son - Richard Wright
The Jesus Mysteries - Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy

The Bible.

The Dark Tower Series - Stephen King
The Odd Thomas Series - Dean Koontz
The Dark Tower series has 7 books, but all of them are fucking amazing. Pretty much the LOTR of S.K.'s career. And the Odd Thomas series were all just absolutely awesome, and has 4 books total. I've read all 11 and would read them again.

stephen king is a good writer and all but i wouldn't put that sort of literature on a 'must read' list. it's simply not inspirational or life-changing enough; it's entertaining and it's a thrill, but you have to ask yourself what is actually there of worth. i'd rate DuBois above King for that very reason.

oh and Machiavelli's The Prince is overrated tbh. You can read a good summary and get the same ideas.
Also... I think A day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich should be on there.
