Couple questions about sports stadiums/arenas.

1)  Are football stadiums in England paid for (like half tax money half investors money) with tax money?

2)  Why do we in the US continue to support these disgusting salaries with tax money?

I can't speak for the UK, but in Australia most football/cricket grounds are owned by the state/local Governments and are leased out to the sporting clubs. The others are financed by private organisations (fund managers etc).

Depends

New football stadiums in the UK are paid for using loans, see Wembley.

Money for new stadiums for london 2012 Olympics are most likely comming out of goverment funds.

I'm pretty sure all the stadiums in Norway that aren't available to the public are owned and funded solely by the teams and investors.

The only exeption I can think of is the national stadium where the national team plays - the Norwegian football federation, which is funded by the government, owns 56% of it.

the cultural aspect, I guess?

I mean, operas, parks, theatres, cinemas, libraries and the like are widely funded by the government in many countries - why not fund sports stadiums as well?

Same problem here.

The Romans figured out the games kept the population compliant, its been going on since then.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou can't hide his delight at delivering his code an effectively new Adelaide stadium - for free.
The AFL won't pay a cent towards a redeveloped Adelaide Oval which will host AFL games within four years.

Demetriou's presence was pivotal in thawing a 40-year stand-off between the main two South Australian sporting bodies.

The SA Cricket Association (SACA) and SA National Football League (SANFL) had not been on speaking terms since a bitter split 40 years ago.

But Demetriou's peacemaking secured a government-funded $450 million redevelopment of Adelaide Oval, with AFL games and international cricket to share residency.

$450 Million? FFS.....

Not happy with that one too. Wrecking one of the best cricket grounds in the world.

$450 million spread across actual participation sports would be one thing.
To spend it so drunk fatties can eat pies and yell at each other is another.

Are sport stadiums not in use like 80% of the time?

During that time I'm sure tons of useful things could be done there in the meantime.

National stadiums like Wembley, Cardiff and Olympics stadiums are paid for by the taxpayer (or taxpayer backed loans). Teams pay for their own.

I think the Nationals Stadium was funded at least in part by taxpayer money. Their goal was not only to provide a stadium for the Nationals, but also to revitalize the neighborhood.

Both goals have been accomplished. The Navy Yard and Waterfront neighborhoods where the stadium is used to be pretty run down. Now they have apartments like this:

In Aus:

Activity            Participation rate (%)
Walking                        39
Aerobics/fitness           17.1
Swimming                    16.5
Cycling                        10.5
Tennis                           8.4
Running                         8.3
Golf                               7.9
Bushwalking                   5.2
Soccer (outdoors)           4.2
Netball                           3.6

That AFL and cricket get $450m spent on them is tiresome, the hiking trails get nothing, the single mountain bike park and velodrome bugger all.
