I read on the ubuntu desktop download page about installing it while in windows. would installing it to the same disk windows is on screw windows up or would it be fine? and would uninstalling ubuntu do anything to the disk/windows?
Its pretty common to do that. It's best to make a new partition and then dual boot.  There are lots of articles on how to do it.  If your on a desktop I would just throw an additional hdd in, put it on there and when you boot just force a manual boot menu and select which drive to boot.  If you decide to keep it you can put a real boot menu on later.

Also would the documents (mp3s, videos, pics, etc) that are in windows be accessible on ubuntu doing the above install, or would I need to do some sort of disk check in it to add those files to its documents? (really weird way to put it but hope you get it) and would uninstalling ubuntu delete the files in windows too?
All the newer distros of linux  I have played with all have native ntfs support and can read windows drives and files.  you just mount the windows drive and it shows up as an additional drive to access.

Can I use microsoft office on ubuntu? (o.0)
I'm not 100% sure on that one but I would think no you cant, and using the wine emulation to run windows programs never worked out that great for me.  Openoffice which most linux ppl use can read and write MS office format, although I've noticed the formatting in calc (similar to excel) is sometimes not perfect.

as I said above, try out the flashdrive method and see if you like it.  they run pretty good from a flash drive.

No its not that bad, especially with all the GUI of the newer versions terminal isn't used a ton.  Whenever I need to do anything with it I just google and its easy to find an answer.

The file system to me anyway makes more sense than lettered drives.

I think it's Lye Nux, however, the Finn who invented it (the guy marine wants dead), Linus Torvalds first name is pronounced Lean Noose.

My Linux professors say Lyn Nux but I guess it's personal preference. If you're talking to someone who knows what it is in the first place, I'm sure they'll know what you mean either way.

<3 open office.

I hate it when people say "Hurr it takes ages to install and customise this app"

Is it just me, or do you guys also love compiling and making apps run in a perfectly moulded customized state that suits exactly what you need to a tee?

you're doing a college course in computing... you don't need to be a linux geek.
As someone doing computer science at Uni... you're pretty much ostracized from the "real" computing community if you don't run linux (then again that can also be seen as a good thing)

You guys are attending the wrong institutions. In the real world, a Computer Science major gets up in the morning surrounded by attractive women who were all satisfied the night before, commutes to the office by parachute, and spins around giant 3D cubes on a twelve foot tall wall of monitors until they align and access is granted to Swiss bank accounts.

rhythmbox is my favorite music player. It comes with ubuntu, but I'm sure you could install it on other distros.
