Watch Zonda R’s Nurburgring lap

A while back, Pagani proudly trumpeted that its Zonda R whizzed around the Nurburgring in 6m47s.

An astonishing feat, you will agree, and no doubt a time likely to stoke the ire of Ferrari, which just happens to make something called a 599XX.

See more pics of the Zonda R at the ’Ring

You will hear lots of ‘lap records' and ‘smashing times' and such, but as there is no official Nurburgring Overseer keeping records, times - essentially - mean nothing.

And Pagani - in a most Spartan-like fashion - hasn't mentioned anything about beating Ferrari. Or setting records.

Want to see how they did it? Well, here is six minutes of steel testes action as a Pagani driver nails the £1.3 million, 739bhp Zonda R around the world's most infamous automotive battleground.

That was awesome. I love the Nurburgring, it's always so much fun to drive in video games and of course to watch supercars do laps of it.

Yes, by 11 seconds.

11 seconds is huge... driver difference perhaps?

surely supercar testers would prefer to benchmark on shorter circuits... where less is about driver-error and concentration, and more is about a neat-lap. im thinking the top-gear track times lap sorta example as opposed to the 'let a guy drive for 8 whole minutes and hope he's perfect and flawless the whole way through'. minimize the human element, you know?

although i guess there is a certain sort of kudos for holding the n-ring record... notorious and infamous.

Yeah you make a good point Uzi, from the perspective of benchmarking the cars. It's easy to knock out 20 laps of the Top Gear track to make sure you get rid of all mistakes, but do 10 laps of the 'ring and you'll be exhausted. But like you said, it's the reputation that means that manufacturers want to have the fastest lap times.

It's a shame that the microphone in there cannot really capture the engine sound as well as it potentially could. Still an awesome video.

Well, nobody has really put some of the fastest cars to the test on that track. There are only 2 commercially available cars that actually go under the 7 minute mark that have been tested. The next car is a BWM E46, so there's a lot that could be tested on that track.

The record is still held by a Porsche 956 though.

the Ferrari never had the record!

the ferrari and the zonda are production cars but are not road legal

the Radicals are road legal

Zondas are quite ugly IMO, but amazing. kind of like the Veyron. very very impressive to see on the road and to stand next to, but not a good looker. and the sound is awesome, not sure which model of Zonda but some sound like F1 cars. with the sound, performance, road presence... awesome.

It's alot of high speed corners in the N-ring. They've never tried a modern F1 car at the big nordshelife circuit. (Not properly) BMW were saying they could do it in around 5:15

Safety reasons is the main reason nobody is trying. The circuit is too crazy for an F1 car. They used to have full races there on the big circuit until 1976 when the cars outgrew the track so they made a smaller circuit next to it for F1.

Imagine doing 14 laps in an F1 GP. There was a huge accident which basically finished off the track in F1

Imagine how bumpy it'd be. You'd never be able to get around the Carousel in an F1 car.

So I fancied I could beat this in NFS: Shift in the Zonda and gave it a whirl, but never got it quite right. My first lap ended up being fastest at 6 minutes 59 seconds (may have still bumped the side once or twice) but it went to shit from there with spinouts and so forth that I could never come together and beat it, although I feel a steering wheel and pedals would have helped more than just simply the keyboard. I planned on doing 10 laps, but by the fifth I couldn't see out of the windshield, so I quit.

I refuse to do racing games with anything less than a joypad tbh. Keyboard is just so unprecise. You really need an anologue input method.

Sounds like a freakin jet when it slows.

Would be good fun to be a passenger for something like that.
