"Upselling," as my boss at Baskin-Robbins called it, actually works (at least in the food industry) a lot better than you'd expect. It doesn't seem like it because reasonable people like you and I never fall for it. But when women walk in to Baskin Robbins and order a cone of Jamoca Almond Fudge, and you say, "One scoop or two?" they will usually say "just one please." HOWEVER, when you say, "2 scoops today?" or do a bit of nudging when they show weakness like "C'mon, the Jamoca is the perfect softness today" they will almost always order 2. They want to order 2 scoops, but they don't allow themselves to do it without having your outside pressure to blame. So as a sales tactic, it is actually a surprisingly effective mind game and I've seen it work more often than not.
