Ergo it appears stationary. Yes, the wheels are moving, but it is still technically stationary if you were to stand next to it.

were the treadmill to spin infinitely fast, and the plane to travel at 1mph, without friction the plane would travel forward.

If the engines are thrusting the plane is moving.

Surely if the level of thrust was constant and the speed of the treadmill was constant and they were both equal, it would have no problems?

Bear in mind this is all theoretical and without outside, practical influences.

if the level of thrust is 50mph, and the treadmill is doing 50mph, the wheels will spin at 100mph and the plane will move forward at 50mph.
