from k through I went to a catholic school then from 4th through 8th I went into what was called an "alternative" school which was a small campus, about 200 students for a k-12 school.  it was public but there was a huge add list and a lot of the other students parents were really upper class wealthy folks like doctors and politicians.  this is where I was in GATE and a summer enrichment program I got to be enrolled in at a really presitigious private prep school.   then, it all went down hill when I went into one of the 4 main public high schools in pasadena.  Got into tagging, then gangs.  I always wanted to be in the army so I dropped out at 17 and got my GED and enlisted.  I was in the 11th grade with like a 0.58 gpa.  pissed me off that the school district let me get all the way to the 11th grade without having a chance to graduate on time as a senior.  figured since i wanted to be a soldier since i was a kid i should just drop out.

the prep school program was only for summer and it was only for "inner city" youths who couldnt afford it.  It happened through that alternatiove school I went to.  did that for 4 summers.

Nah, that was my roomate at DLI.
DLIFLC itself made the whole experience worthwhile.  Everything else was just a bonus.
Was a great experience to go somewhere where the top 1% of the class in highschool became the average student.

Myself, it was for the college fund, and my family seems to have a particular twitch that actually enjoys parts of the military.
Where else do you get paid to play with C4 and heavy weapons, go hiking and camping, and visit foreign countries?

f'ing German girls, how do they work?!

Ahh, I went to a similar program called On Your Marks. It was held at a summer camp and I would spend my mornings attending the camp in the sports program and my afternoons in class studying stuff like the Jabberwocky. My stepfather worked at the school the camp was hosted at and I ended up attending there for high school for free. Yay me. Then I got kicked out with two months left in my senior year because I got hit with severe depression as I watched all my friends get accepted to Ivy League schools while my father, who was supposed to pay for college, fell off the face of the earth (I didn't know it, but he was robbed, hit over the head and spent the next seven months in a coma, but he was broke anyway, he'd quit working a year and a half prior) and I stopped caring about school. I was warned that if I turned in a paper late again I would be expelled and I turned in the very next paper a day late. Sent me packing back to public school for the final quarter where I took exactly one class, gym, in order to graduate.

I have no idea what DLIFLC is.

I had a bunch of reasons for joining but the overriding ones were that I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, was bored in community college, and was in a state of serious depression.

Crash and burn, depression, and bored at life.  Seems to be a prevalent theme for the effect of No Child Left Behind on those 'best and brightest' that should be doing the leaving behind.

Seems like the very name No Child Left Behind explicitly states the intent to wreck the most promising kids, knowing the impossibility of bringing ahead the paste eating window lickers.
