No. You get an item that acts as a 'point-a-to-point-b' selection tool. From there, you manipulate the selection by expanding in one or more of eight directions, then copy, cut, paste, set (block type), etc. The advantage is that it allows you to focus exclusively on building stuff rather than gathering the material for it or, if you don't want to, building scaffolding.

I'd argue on whether or not that's the easiest way, considering you'd need wood to cook the raw wood, plus you miss out on Iron/Diamond/other rarity chances by not spelunking.

This was something I had no idea about. I'd say it's pretty $#*& useful in a pinch if you need torches yesterday. But the charcoal you get won't fit in the same stack as coal.
