Someone posted this on Reddit. A building in Fallout Camden

It needs a cleaning, paint touch up, new windows, transportation to a nice neighborhood, and white people painted over but otherwise I really like it. I like this type of public art and prefer it to maroon brick and grey concrete. A nearby apartment building has David Bowie on the side. You can see it from the highway.

Also, lets talk about statues. The Roman and Greek statues we dig out of the ground may be pure white and sophisticated looking but in reality they were painted some gaudy colors. I prefer the originals.

forget statues, it was established a while ago that even the parthenon and most important ancient greek buildings which survive today were originally multi-coloured. just like the pagan sites of britain and gaul.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy AC (although it's rather formulaic), but I have some small beef with the franchise for having "historical tours" with altered social dynamics to make the world depicted be more appealing to a modern crowd (multigendered schools, ancient egypt: this ruffled some stickler feathers back in the day). Normally it would be a small blip like the Chernobyl documentary, but then there's this:

There's a whole bunch of articles pointing out how great the games are for teaching history in their nonviolent tours. Ubisoft very much marketed it in part as a tool for teachers, "we consulted with historians and egyptologists, etc.!"

I don't know if they've been making similar tweaks since, because I haven't played Odyssey or beyond, but I don't seem to remember the Egypt tour clarifying what was historical and what was creative liberty. Just as bad as some documentaries that way.

It's also troubling to me that a game named "Assassin's" anything is a classroom tool.

Odyssey would need a disclaimer that all the big statues are artistic liberty cause it was an age of myths and heroes.

Whenever I see a docudrama put up something like "we consulted with the experts!" my bs radar goes off, and I'll be on the watch for all the stuff the experts probably told them that they chose to ignore. I've even seen this gripe on costume designers' youtube channels.

Anyway I think AC is a cool tool for the digital tour, just as long as people understand that some of what they're looking at is split from reality, and which things those are. Ubisoft shouldn't be playing coy with "guess what's fake!"

Municipal budgets are interesting. Never enough money to do all of the things you need to do.

I hosted an event at a library that was built in 1904. It needs a lot of repair and upgrades. Millions of dollars worth of work.

People want to save these things and prevent their replacements with housing developments. But they need absurd amount of repair and renovations and the high ceilings make them a pain to heat and cool.

americans talking seriously about the expense and difficulty of maintaining buildings from *checks notes* the 1900s. how quaint!

several generations of my family sacrificed themselves upon the altar of work in the City just to foot the repair bill for the roof on an 18th century pile. you know nothing of maintenance! i've seen men go swivel-eyed and grind their molars into paste over the costs of heating a georgian townhouse through a devilish winter.

besides, didn't they already cover this jersey church thing?

Speaking of Italian Americans there is a subreddit for people who want to emigrate from the U.S. They were upset Italy passed a law tightening citizenship from descent.

A lot of "what will your country do without any young American workers?" Okay, you guys can't even show up to help your own neighborhood. You are really planning to save Italy?

i'm not upset with americans for wanting to leave america. i don't think people are traitors for emigrating from their homeland. it's goofy af to think otherwise. humans did not spontaneously evolve in all corners of the world.

this isn't exactly a settled question in science fyi, but admittedly you have to sidestep a lot of very spurious archeological research coming out of china that wants to put it on the 'early hominids' map.

humans didn't just smoothly evolve, either. most of europe was populated by neanderthals, which ... uh ... well let's just say a few early europeans had an especially hirsute uncle or three. which was assumedly the pattern all over the globe with the various early populations.
