I have to say my knowledge of their conflict with Russia is limited to word of mouth. I do know Russian conscripts were burned alive and beheaded a lot. So, what started that mess and will it ever flare up again? or is it like Israel and the Pals?

They are Muslims and were prosecuted under the Soviet system for it. There is still a lot of resentment over that and a lot of the Muslims want to break off from the Russian Federation.

Southern Russia has always been rebellious. Chechnya-Dagestan has been fighting Russia for centuries. It's an old conflict that was suppressed during the Soviet reign. They wanted their independence when the rest of the USSR broke up and Russia wouldn't let them leave.
