The thing is idling at fucking 80 degrees C and I have no idea why

4870 1GB and I havent touched the fan speed. Its still stock as is all of the clock speeds and shit. And I know the fan is working, is there something im missing? Should I take it out and clean it up? I have no idea what I should do with it.

Obviously I could increase the fan speed but I don't know why after a year or two I should have to increase the speed, do you think its burning out?

increase the fan speed... i wouldn't worry about it hurting anything, i had an 8800 that ran hot as hell, i ran the fan speed at 100, played games for 3 yrs with it, and its still working.  im using it now to watch tv through my old computer.

Is any hot air (environmental or component) blowing over your video card or does your chassis have sufficient airflow? Is your case open or closed? Closed is better if the case is well-designed, unless you want to have a giant fan pointed at your components.

e: Also, verify that the settings in your BIOS are all normal.

That's what happens when you buy games for $3 and play them for 39 minutes.

I'm just concerned because I havent had to have the speed as high as im running it now. Is it just age?

Its a closed case, I think the airflow is pretty good, its a smallish case so there is alot of shit everywhere.

While it is strange that the temps have suddenly gone up. Those cards can take a lot of heat and still come back for more, so I wouldn't be to concerned.

I wouldn't be concerned if 80c was the load temp but if it's idling at 80c (which is what the OP says) then I'd worry as the load temps will almost surely go above "safe" temps.

it's possible, (small chance, but still possible) the heat sink on the gpu has become slightly loose.  if you're comfortable with this sort of thing, you can re-grease and re-seat the heat sink on the gpu, but it will most certainly void your warranty.  80 isn't a terrible temp, so i would just bump up the fan speed unless it gets worse.

Sounds to me that the fan is broken... XD

Have you physically looked to see if it's running?

the thermal paste could have disintegrated. I would clean that paste and put a new one on. Also use speedfan app or something to check how many RPMs does the fan make
