Not true at all actually...

If you get a certification as an HVAC tech, you can make quite a bit of money straight out of school.  The same is true of an aviation tech degree.

There are all sorts of skilled jobs that are blue collar that pay pretty well and are high demand.

The only catch is that these types of jobs usually have a lower salary ceiling than what certain 4 year degrees can grant you access to.  Usually, a 4 year degree has more social value for an entry level office job, and from there, you can move up in a company.  However, this usually requires getting a Masters and sometimes a doctorate.

Basically, the technical route is better for the average person, since most people aren't really academic.  Society in general needs far fewer academics than technically inclined people.

Right, but I'm not talking about technical schools here, I'm talking about community colleges which generally offer a 'lite' version of a degree from a four year college. At a community college, people generally take what would be the core classes of a four year degree. Frankly, I don't know anyone that plans on stopping their schooling after two years so comparing a community college to a technical school is apples and oranges.

I don't have a problem with community colleges, they're a fabulous way to save on tuition bills. But to say that a person can get by in life with nothing more than an associates degree (technical schools don't hand out associates, they hand out certificates) is just folly.

Hmm...  Ok, I see what you mean now.  I guess I get confused easily with the terminology, because most of the community colleges in my area are technical schools.  They do have the kind of degrees you're talking about, but the majority of effort seems to be towards actual workplace training.

you: arbitrary, bias, subjective evaluations of subjects, based upon whimsical personal anecdotes and extreme examples
me: simply distinguishing between 2 different classes of educational institution - that's on paper, factual

i apologize for not trying to appeal to or persuade somebody to sympathize with my cause! we could surely use a lot more supporters that want to make irrational cuts to certain subjects exclusively based on some organised 'system' and method of personal taste!

it's more fun to just curiously explore people's asinine subject-breakdowns... some basis for cuts that is

i don't really think it's snobby to differentiate between 'proper' universities and polytechnics... i mean they've just been merged, on paper...

to differentiate between university subjects and individual degrees does involve a certain amount of subjectivity, though- i.e. snobbish judgement

A University is simply a building, a staff and a syllabus.
Snobbery about public schools and universities is just that, snobbery.

Yes, but the snobbery is not completely baseless. The more highly regarded universities tend to have better staff, equipment, resources, etc.

I'm not happy about this whole tuition fee business at all. If this keeps going the way its going, I will probably be the part of the first year that pays these higher fees, as I hope to go to Uni in 2012. £3000 would be bad enough, but I couldn't live with £9000+.

I guess what annoys people is that the Lib Dems had it on their manifesto that they would abolish tuition fees altogether, but once they got into government, they decided to turn around and treble them. If I voted for them, I would be extremely pissed too. But now, I'm just afraid of what will happen, how much debt that I will be in. It really is some scary shit.

They're destroying public and private property. Clearly the police are ineffective. Did I say kill? No. Forcing them to behave is quite another story.

hahahaha galt.

do you know anything about what is happening in London right now? are you there? or are you just reading your little papers?

16 year old school-children are being kettled and have been at every single protest by the police

i know some people there right now that have been kettled tonight, here's their fb status:

"thousands and thousands of young people, workers and lecturers have been kettled for 6 hours and up, in parliament square and now on westminister bridge for more than an hour. No access to toilets, water, food. V.cold."

[via text message]

great job though galt im sure you're going to have lots of intelligent things to say that demonstrate an excellent understanding of the controversy.

Heh, I've spent the evening shooting down all the ridiculous posts from students on Facebook about the protests. A lot of them seem to think violence is the only way to be heard, which obviously makes it all too easy.
